2 Red 1600's at Mecum Denver

Post by joinrdie »

I live in Denver, and am just starting to look for a roadster (after thinking about it or 15 years or so...)
Came across these which will be on the block in two weeks:

A '69 1600
https://www.mecum.com/lot-detail/DN0615 ... e/4-Speed/

and a '66
https://www.mecum.com/lot-detail/DN0615 ... -Roadster/

It'll be interesting to see what they go for.

Can we move this thread to the valuations topic so it doesn't get deleted?

Lets see how it goes.

They look pretty nice to me - keep us updated on final price.

I like the leather dash cover on the high windshield one. An interesting, sharp look.

I was able to negotiate the afternoon off on Friday, so I'm planning on going down to Mecum to check out these two cars. Not yet sure if I'll be signing on as a bidder just yet, but I'll report back on what I see.

Each of these cars went for $15k.
My inspection of the '66 revealed a cracked trunk floor, low coolant situation and leaks from rear main, fuel pump and differential. There had been an aftermarket stereo at some point, but now there are just a few unterminated wires in the trunk and glove box.
The' 69 exhibited a slight rear main leak but was otherwise in pretty good condition.

Yeah, personally I was willing to part with $9000 - $9500 for the '69, as it was in good shape. Bidding started off slow, but as soon as I bid 7k, it was on!
The '66, I don't think I would have bid on at all, in keeping with the "buy the best car you can afford" philosophy.

I was all over and under these cars prior to their crossing the block, and I kind of hovered to gauge interest for most of the day. From what I could tell, these other bidders were not especially thorough. After the auction the owner approached me assuming it was I who bought the car, and agreed that the closing price was higher than expected.

Overall, I'm glad I went, as I got to get real personal with a couple of these cars and see some of the things I've read about.

The search shall continue...
