re-intall clean/sealed fuel tank
re-intall rebuilt fuel filter bowl
re-intall rebuilt fuel pump

clean fuel going into carbs!!

I hooked up the battery charger to condition the battery so that it will start. First warm sunny day we have had that I wanted to take her out of winter storage, and she wouldn't start. Maybe next weekend!

Had the same trouble yesterday.
I assume the engine cranks over OK?
Apart from the battery being kaput, once the float bowls dry out there can be quite a delay in getting the fuel into them when cranking.
I tried a little trick which seemed to work just fine.
I poured a tiny bit of fuel over the exposed top face of the paper air filter and the fumes were enough to get the little beastie to fire up.
Once running the fuel pump quickly took over and filled the system.

Alternatively, remove the spark plugs and crank the engine until the fuel bowl shows activity.
Replace the plugs and try again.

The battery still has a green indicator but drops from 12.5V to 4V when I try to crank the engine :(

Fuel Gauge testing in the car ...

Hope you guys are not sick of my posts yet ...

Today I applied this (9.6 volts)

And got a full reading on the gauge. This confirmed the gauge is good (tank is full of fuel). With 8.6 volts from an older 9 volt I got a reading of 7/8ths of a tank.

Now to determine what to do next.

Options:
a.) Purchase new mechanical voltage regulator (never had a lot of luck with these).
b.) Build my own 9 volt regulator source (see the web)
c.) Place an ACE battery inline with a in-line relay to allow current flow on at "liftoff" aka ignition switch in running position.
d.) Try to repair my voltage regulator (tried it once already it still bounces around)
e.) Live with a floaty-fuel-gauge which reads empty at ~5.5 gallons
f.) See if I can find an old regulator in working order

Several options and several threads on it if you do a search. I bought a newer Nissan solid state one that works well. But it is pricier then the self built one or the ones you can buy off ebay and elsewhere. There is one guy on there that will take your old case and put a SS one in it.

Check Nissanman's posts for this very subject back in Jan-feb timeframe. He had a brilliant fix for this that cost about $2-$3.

Woke one up from a long cold winter's slumber...put battery in...cranked up the oil pressure with the coil disconnected...connected the coil...started right up...sweet music to my old, cold, tired ears...

79 here today...I am looki g at the other two under covers...I would awaken the two, but have a b-day dinner to attend...damn :x

Might be a blessing...still some road salt out there...nasty stuff, we need some heavy down pours to get that crap off the roads

Like Joe R, I put my car on the road for the first time this year - you Left Coast members are missing the joy of hearing that first fire up, after a loooong cold winter.....really, you guys are missing out. Pulled the plugs, squirt of 20 wt in each cylinder, shot of either in each cylinder, final shot of either in the air cleaner intake....turn key....immediate fire-up.
Did my normal 30 mile back roads loop......I'm still smilin

Thanks for all the good advice I was able to "fix" my gauge Vreg with sandpaper and a good ground. Reads solid still only 7/8ths when full (even after "tuning" the sending unit to 10.5 ohms out of the tank). I even found I have a backup working V-regulator. I can live with it (7/8ths as long as it is consistent). Might look for the 2 buck fix for future reference.

I would prefer the gauge read E when some fuel is still in the tank and the F reading is arbitrary if you have just filled it up and know it is full :idea:

An update to my $3 fix.
I filled the tank to the brim last Sunday and the fuel gauge read past full.
It took just shy of 30L meaning there was ~14L remaining in the tank prior.
The gauge reading with 14L was ~3mm above empty so the solid state regulator seems to be just perfect in my opinion :)

Nissanman,

I agree although I can get along without the gauge with a working odometer. it is selling the car with a full tank I am contemplating ... But selling with an empty tank makes more sense :)

I took it out of storage, got a full tank of gas and found my front driver's side wheel weights were hitting the caliper. Proceeded to jack the car up and fix the issue, only to dump about half a gallon of gas out the back.
