Reverse light switch
The reverse light on my car seems to be staying on all the time. Is that a faulty switch, or a possible grounding problem? Are the switches repairable or must I buy another one? Not even sure where the switch is but I believe there is one on the late cars.
One of those components you don't hear much about.
Thanks,
Linda

It is on the pasenger side of the trans. I'm not sure how to diagnose a problem with it though. My reverse lights won't go on at all. I just bought a new switch, but haven't had time to install yet.Import_sounds-of-mid-GA wrote:is the reverse switch the thing that plugs into the tranny on the pass. side??

There is a pic on the Rallye site and at least one for bid on EBay. Also the back-up light.

Re: Reverse light switch
It is a simple switch, on the passenger side of the transmission. Take an ohmmeter and between the two connectors the circuit should be open (no reading) when the car is in any gear other than reverse, and CLOSED (Full scale reading) when in reverse only. If it is closed all the time in all gears, then the switch is bad. Otherwise look for a short between the wires - are the two terminals touching each other, have the wires melted together anywhere?

Re: Reverse light switch
Stuck on is usually a switch problem. not working at all could be switch or could be wiring.

Re: Reverse light switch
Since you have a metric car the switch should still be available from Nissan unless they have recently discontinued it.
The switch screws into the side of the transmission. The wires run up over the transmission and connect up underneath the master cylinders. Wires are red with a black stripe unless someone has replaced them.

Re: Reverse light switch
Sorry I should have provided more info. Reverse lamps were disconnected by PO. Checked the switch and always on. Bought new switch. Both new and old switches test good. Both switch will turn off as they are threaded out of the transmission. I would add a spacer but it would be pretty thick. Something doesn't seem right. If I remove the switch, what should I see in the hole?
Thanks RB

Re: Reverse light switch
Not sure how much you can see if you shine a light in the hole. What happens is when you put it in reverse a lever inside the transmission swings over and presses the switch on. You will lose your fluid if you leave it out. You could put a short plug in if you had to.RBMann wrote:Sorry I should have provided more info. Reverse lamps were disconnected by PO. Currently on Ebay you can get a new switch from Thailand for $18. I bought a flasher from there before.

Re: Reverse light switch
Since both the new switch I bought and the one that came with the car work properly it must be the lever in the trans. Hope it doesn't drop between gears as I am pulling red-line in 4th.Curtis wrote:

I'm having the same prob. My switch tests OK on the bench, but not in the trans. Did you ever figure this out? I'd appreciate any answers I can get.
Thanks, Dean

By any chance do the backup lights go out when you put it in reverse?devo wrote:

RB,
I'm having the same prob. Re: Reverse light switch
That is what needs to be done....if it's the correct switch, it shouldn't need a really thick washer, but it does need to be shimmed correctly to work right. BTDT...RBMann wrote: I would add a spacer but it would be pretty thick.

Re: Reverse light switch
Paul, my car is apart. The switch bench tested good on the ohm meter. But when installed in the tranny does not test good on the ohm meter with the tranny in reverse.
Mike, You say this will work with a spacer in there, did it come with one originally? Do you know how thick?
Thanks for the replies, Dean
