Are the 1600 and 2000 Tach cables the same?

Post by Maggie »

Hi Guys,
Does anybody know if the tach cables are the same on the 1600 and the 2000. My tachometer didn't work, it would do complete revolutions. I purchases another one,it's from a 2000. I installed it and hooked it up and nothing happens. I can hear the cable turning inside. I checked the cable and it is turning. I'm thinking that maybe the little square end that hooks to the tach is a bit bigger on the 2000 cable. Please help!!!!!!!

1965 - 1970 are the same but according to Ralleye's website there is an old and a new style. I have no clue what the difference might be but it would not be the square ends of the cables. I think at this point your problems may be with the gauge itself. Does the cable spin freely in the housing? A good cleaning with some lubricant can help. You can hook the tach cable to the gauge and try spinning the other end with a cordless drill to see what the gauge does or does not do.

Hi Steve,
The cable does spin but the tach dosen't. I hate the thought of having to change it out. It's a real pain to get to. I gonna buy a new cable and hope that does it. Wish me luck!

Good luck Maggie! That is just another reason why I like the low windshield cars better. They are easier to work on when it comes under or in dash problems. The high windshields are quite a bit harder when it comes to working on the gauges. Let us know how you fair.

The difference between the old and new cables is that the new style has a longer steel section right where it goes into the tach or speedo. The last 4 inches or so don't bend, so it can be difficult to install - worse in a high windshield car than a low in my opinion. Functionally, they are the same, and the new style probably goes a long way to minimizing failures of gauges.
