Stock Spindles in race form

Post by silvertiger »

Just wanted to ask for some input on stock spindles. Has anyone had any issues like flex or breaking/cracking over time? I'm going to be running 225/15 tires. Love to hear from some of the people racing/really hard driving roadsters.

Thanks

Trevor

I've seen them crack. It is one of the items to check routinely (you need to remove the press on collar to magnaflux the radius) on a race car along with multiple areas of the front suspension. Pay particular attention to the upper shock, suspension mounts, panhard bar and antirollbar mount areas of the frame. Also the balljoints, grease everything and inspect before every race.

Is this a race car using race rubber on track or a street car? If a street car, I wouldn't be too concerned about it. I used 225s on my old street/autocross roadster for years without any issues. Regardless these are old cars with old parts so it's good to inspect things when doing maintenance.

Looking at making new upper and lower control arms. The idea being to use a coil over shock set up. Debating on spindles to use. I am not going nuts on this. Just trying to do it smart. This not a no cost$$$$ project build.

The little lady will be driven hard. From track days to road rallies. After time auto crossing, hill climbs and a good amount of karting. My relaxed driving speed is different.

The Wilwood Pro Spindles are available in standard and 2" drop.
The Wilwood Pro Spindles are 11° which means you would be running more caster and camber than the 8° stock spindles.

They take pinto ball joints, are about twice as heavy as the stock spindles and maybe 4x or more stronger as they are forged steel.

They have lots of "bolt" on aluminum hubs and performance brake set-ups for Pro Spindles

If you want to go 5 x 4.5 you can get hubs, rotor, adapters, calipers for about 1K

This is my favorite!

Here are the rest of wilwoods choices.

If you want 4 x 4.5 than I would go with speedway engineering hubs and rotor adapter for about $600 and than you still need rotors, calipers and mounting which could easily run $500 to $800 more.

Stock spindles will hold up to hard racing with cantilever slicks. Yes, magnaflux to be sure, but I've only broken one in years of hard racing and that one was a result of hard impact.

I've been running 225s on my car for awhile. I haven't had any issues with the front end, the rear axles are a weak point however. I've broken at least 6 rear axles, both sides. The ones I have broken have all been in the splines in the diff. All the failures I've had have been similar to this. I've broken axles with 195s, 205s but I haven't broken one with the 225s.... yet.

Wil,
Are you running any camber in the rear?
Have you tried "Crowned" spines on the axle.

No camber on the rear, I wish I had a little (I tend to chew up the outside edges of my rear tires, leaving the inside inch or so untouched). The only aftermarket axles I've found are the Summers Bros ones that are stupid expensive and hard to get.
