James,
It's taking longer then expected for the interior to go in. I am still in the process of getting the little things together. I just receive the door striker from a member today. wicked fast shipping ( thanks Brian)
Hopefully the car will head back to the shop by next week or earlier. Difitnely pictures once the transmission is in.

I know this is a tough question to answer considering the range of prices for the transmissions, but how much can one expect to spend on a 5 speed conversion for the 1600?

Let's see:
Transmission rate on fleabay seems to be around $750
5 speed spacer plate (thicker) abour $75
Clutch and pressure plate $200
Driveline $100
5 speed shift plate $50
crossmember $75
Parts for 5 speed (seals and such) $100

These are just wags, prices for used parts are often as much luck as condition.
I'd guess you'd do well to do it under a grand and not more than $1500 but I'm guessing. That's not counting having someone go thru the transmission if you aren't positive it's in perfect condition and of course does not count labor.

The problem is, parts and cars are going up so prices guys paid a few years ago mean nothing.

OK...Need some Guru knowledge.

I am returning my 67 2000 (Car #529) back to U20/5spd drivetrain. For the past 10+ years it has been running an R16/4spd. When I purchased the car, the 4spd was barely usable.

I just brought home a freshly rebuilt 5spd transmission (Thanks, James!), but not sure what Transmission mount I currently have (as it came originally with the car). U20 engine is in the shop, and I'm trying to collect all the pieces necessary to re-install the drivetrain.

Here are a few pics:

Measured the pictured cross-member (From my SRL311 with 1600/4spd) and another cross member I was given. Both are tall (approx 3.25 inch).

Tom: I believe I have the same two 4spd models of cross-members as you originally had.

From reading through this thread, it appears the correct 5spd cross-member should be much shorter (Height).

Agreed?

Yes, definitely. The wrong on will really cant the engine and make it about impossible to get the engine mounts on. I did it, but they were obviously stressed and wrong.

That is definitely not a 5 speed cross member but does indeed look like a 4 speed cross member. This is what a correct 5 speed cross member looks like. 5 speed is much shorter.

Thanks, Steve & Tom. I definately don't have the shorter 5spd cross member.

Here are some snaps of the two 4spd cross member styles that I have:

If you can't find a 5 speed, you can cut and re-weld one of the 4 speed crossmembers. As we found out, the holes need to be moved slightly but it works. The usual suspects probably have a 5 speed mount.
