Wow, I can finally add to this. Picked up the remains of spl#05039 on Saturday. It got sold for parts and parted out after a failed attempt at a V8 conversion. The chassis was hacked up in the attempt, the x brace went missing so we cut it small enough to lift it in the truck along with the engine/transmission. Nobody wants to see pictures of that! The body remained behind to be merged with another chassis.
67.5 1600 ongoing project.
71 510 wagon sweet, next mod is KA24 conversion with 5spd.
74 Honda cb360 nearly complete restoration.
2006 Nissan Sentra parts hauler.
More parts than any sane person should have.

Started taking all the trim and blinge off to begin prepping for the body work and paint. Received the two bottom rear quarter panels from Dean today. Ran the car by a body shop in San Luis Obispo to get some idea of $…not gonna be cheap but if I do it in chunks might be doable. I'm pretty limited here on the Central Coast (CA) with choices of shops so if someone has suggestions in LA, Bay Area, Fresno area, or Modesto area please let me know. I'm not reluctant to travel as long as quality and price is right.

Wed: Pulled the rear axles.
Thurs: Cut the spacers and bearings off the rear axles.
Fri: Delivered cam bearings to machine shop. Got to see my freshly blasted head & block, and freshly turned crankshaft.

Figured out some wiring errors from the previous owner. Also may have solved the mystery of why my temp sender and fuel Guages aren't working thanks to 2 different multimeters and the wiki section!

reason for 2 multimeters, I borrowed one that ended up being broken...talk about confusing while digging through wiring messes. Thanks to harbor freight! Father's Day free gift was....A MULTIMETER!

Yesterday I replace my smog plugs with a good set and my engine sounds 5x better! I wish I had done this months ago.

Can you give specifics? I'd like to see if it might work for my engine. Thanks.

I bought the set DatsunParts, com sells "#2208 Smog Plug Inserts." Before that I had some square headed plugs. The problem with the square headed plugs is they don't fill the hole, they just cap the top of it. So as air is pushed out you exhaust port a whistle sound is made. My sounded like a chirp. Especially noticeable at idle.

You can see in the photo how much longer the plugs should be. That missing section on the square plugs is what makes the noise due to air turbulents. Dave Premo explained all of this to me at Solvang.
Smog Plug.JPG

The DatsunParts plugs fill the hole completely and I only hear the engine now. The chirp is completely gone.
If you plan on going this route, find yourself a 14mm 1.5 pitch grade 8 bolt. You need it to chase the threads and clean them up before installing the new plugs.

To remove the square headed plugs use a 3/8" socket. Follow svwilber's instructions:

All I can say is it well worth the money.

I was in a bind and needed some fast, so I took some allen head cap screws, dropped them in the hole, then put the pipe plugs on top. Worked fine.

I think that is what Premo was saying to do as well. That would be cheaper.
Not sure of the durability but at that cost. Who cares.

Today I got my clutch disc relined! Finding a new or even used replacement spl310 Borg and beck clutch disc is about as likely as winning the lottery I've found...so a plug for Commercial Brake and Clutch in Fife WA: Excellent workmanship, very reasonable price and friendly too. I couldn't be happier with them. 1 day turnaround was also nice.

Here is what the old lining looked like:

And the new and improved lining:

Well, it was not actually today. Have been out of town all week. Nice blurry cell phone pic.

Mine are coming, can't wait! Lots of changes for the car that still need to be sorted, but what's new? What settings are suggested with this version of Koni?

Drove it from ME to MA w/o any issues on Friday (6 hours, whew!). Now that it gets double the gas mileage than my Xterra gets, it may have to be my nice day commuter.

Drove it in this morning.
