Paul - I believe that Bob's primary statement was intended as a positive rallying point to try and drive discussion and ultimately encourage Roadster owners to get out and say great things about their cars. I think that there has been a lot read into his tone by some who feel that he was scolding them for talking down roadsters.

I'll ask for the third time in this thread. Have you ever met a roadster owner that didn't get out and say great things about these cars? That told people they were junk?

A few of us have asked in this thread, what exactly are we supposed to do? Talk the cars up? Encourage others to buy one? Restore a car? A bunch of us have been doing that for 20-30 years..

I've never met an owner that did not talk the cars up, has anyone else?

I'm going to speak only for myself in response to your comments. When I'm nudged to take action of some kind, I nudge back, and say, rhetorically, "Did you notice I'm already there?"

That's what I feel is the essence of my exchange with you and Bob.

It's all in good spirit; I don't feel vexed, but I do feel puzzled when my efforts at promoting our car are not acknowledged as part of having been nudged on the topic.

As I have often said to the fairer set - if I say something that can be taken one of two ways, and one of those ways pisses you off - I meant the other. Intonation and inflection are lost in text. Anyhow, I think Bob's comments were a reflection of his recent acquisition and corresponding enthusiasm coupled with a realization that nobody knows these cars exist... (This is hyperbole - some people know they exist but not as many as we would like...).

And don't call my construct faulty. I stand by it when the sentence is read in it's entirety. I don't thnk your crit stands when the whole statement is considered - that is not however a challenge for you to re-address it. I agree with the premise that those putting money in over time are committed. And some deserve to be...

Honestly, I think Bob "losing control of his thread" has more to do with those who have gotten almost vexatious and clearly un-roadsterlike with there response to his assertions - annoying though some of them may have been. However, when a guy is getting rundown for attempting to rouse positive energy, I stand with him. I respect him electing to try and diffuse the onslaught. Something I was trying to likewise do - my tone was intended to be more inclusive. Perhaps I should have used emoticons.

And this thread needs more pics of roadsters like Geoff's - and Geoff - your comment here was awesome.

I am hoping that Mark's rhetorical question is a good point to end or even pause this discussion. Let's revisit the subject 5 in years and see how wrong or right we were in predicting the future. In the meantime, we have important technical issues to re-solve and re-improve and roadster events to re-plan and repeat. That is what we do best to meet our "Value Appreciation" expectations.

Seriously, lets examine what's new and newsworthy.

I did run into one guy that talked bad about Roadsters. He owned a turd and based his entire premise of the car on evils of the PO. Of course, he was sort of a jerk and had nothing good to say about much of anything...

I liked a comment I read earlier - from David I think - that we as the "in the know" guys tend to base the value on the last "killer barn-find deal" we got. When a car sells for more than that we tend to say it was over-valued. That is BECAUSE we know and like the cars, not in spite of it.

I am oficially regaining control of this thread, or trying to.

This was meant from the beginning to be about encouraging all of you to speak out loud of the Datsun Roadster's real value, in all of its various degrees of restoration from very rough to very fine, including soft and hard modifications. So far as I know, this is the premier site for knowledgable Datsun Roadster enthusiasts and others interested. My appeal was to those of you who think maximizing ultimate value would spur more salvation, restoration and interest, and be a net good.

I did not foresee controversy, not much anyway.

I get that some of the purists thought this sacrilege. Because, I gather, the true Datsun Roadster enthusiast should be indifferent to the ultimate value of his or her efforts and the value of his or her resulting Datsun Roadster. While I understand love and passion and the notion of doing what is needed even if its expense is high, and maybe too high to be reasonable, I submit that approach undermines the best ultimate purpose. If we spend more than we say the car is ultimately actually worth, we devalue the effort and the cars.

I say speak up to tell the world that Datsun Roadsters are worth preserving and cherishing. In the best condition they are as valuable, or more valuable, than many contemporary roadsters, and even in rough condition, they are certainly worth saving.

You have to keep in mind that there are owners and proprietors of Datsun Roadsters have been doing this for awhile now. I still don't get what you are hung up on, and spurs the incessant "must profess the praises of these cars" crusade... is it because of:
1) The BaT response or 311s.org response to the purchase price/value of your roadster?
2) a few random posters on an online forum that express their desire/opinion to keep roadster values "low" ?
3) Ted's lack of approval?

Why aren't you highlighting the beautiful things this community has done to promote the cars and raise the value? Why didn't you go the Sonoma Concours to sing the praises to the judges? Several of us did our part to participate and promote it.

Please open a booth at the Solvang Show to pass out flyers. I can help. I'm okay with the media stuff. I've done a *little* Datsun Roadster promoting in my limited ownership on this planet. The world hasn't heard much from me, yet.
