Cooling system/carb questions (pics!)

Post by camronware »

Please pardon my newbie-ness, but I'm really kinda lost on these things..

Ok, I've checked out the cooling system diagrams on the site, and according to them, am I missing a line right here? Sure does look like it..but I don't have a T connector off the radiator..

Image

Also, that line there goes to the inlet on the overflow tank correct? I found it dangling no where this afternoon.
Now, underneath the overflow, the outlet, is that supposed to have a line coming off of it dumping out to the ground?

Image

Next question..this line and the one like it on the other carb just simply dumps out to the ground, correct? Why is that?

Image

And here is another for fun...no...it's not a 2000 engine in a 2000 model..why the previous owner wanted to put a 1600 in, I'll never know.. (Not that there is anything wrong with the 1600! :) )

Thanks for any help and input to my newbie-ness

1. Yes you are missing the small inlet on your radiator it probably broke off and a radiator shop probably didnt know and t he just left that one. You could probably go to your hardware store and find a small brass T pipe and pass the overflow bottle and the other to the head.

2. That is the overflow tube spits out any gas if it overflows normally overflows if your floats are bad. Make sure those are away from your exhuast!!

Hope this helps.

The tubes coming out of the carbs are overflows. In case the float fails, you'll dump fuel on the ground instead of in the engine. Make sure the tubes are long enough so that it won't dump the fuel on your exhaust, that could cause a mighty mess that you may not need to clean up.

cool..thanks guys..

I guess I'll have to drill another hole in the radiator and use some type of threaded nipple to make the other line...any tips on this?

Your radiator is a 2000 radiator. It has the L fitting while the 1600 has the T fitting. Since you have the 2000 rad, you can just cap off the fitting on the head. The cap on the head and radiator will let you make sure that the cooling system is full. Make sure that you burp the thermostat with a long screwdriver. Easy to do and helps a LOT.

The overflow (usually a yellowed piece of line) off of the overflow tank does indeed just dump on the floor.

The lines on the carbs are fuel overflows. Most all carbs vent to the atmosphere. Nissan gave you a couple of lines to route the venting. MAKE SURE that they go below the level of the exhaust though...

As to why a 1600 into a 2000? 2000 engines can be expensive and tough to find at times. 1600s on the other hand are sometimes tough to give away. I like the 1600 myself, but if you want a 2000, I have a spare in the garage that I could sell you!

Well there we have it..
thanks Sid! Ok, I've never capped off a fitting like that before, what is the best thing to use?

I'll just stick to the 1600 for now, but maybe later on down the road I'll think about another engine. I just want to get this one running right. :)

you can buy a vacuum cap assortment. How did you fit a STANT radiator cap on there though? That should just be a regular cap like on the radiator.

everything you see was the work of the previous owner..a 70-something year old guy who I think wasn't too sure what was what. I can see his touch throughout the interior..it's...interesting.

Camron,

That just begs for more pictures. It's always interesting to see what people do to these cars!

Hi Camron, I thought I would throw in my 2 cents in. If possible I would change the cap on the head with the one on the overflow tank. Then put a pressure relief cap on the tank. This will allow the tank to function. By looking at the overhead photo it looks like the tank has no pressure relief cap. I might be wrong but it looks that way to me.
Also like Sid mentioned, take your time filling up with coolant and get all the air out before road testing. Bill
