Dually Roadster?

Post by datsun65 »

I decided to purchase original vintage 2 1/4 Wide White wall tires for my 1964 1500. These tires (from Coker tire) are period correct 5.60 4-ply tires. Now to give you a feel...these are close in size to a 155/80r13 tires. Very small, very skinny tire.

But when they arrived they were shrink wrapped in plastic, two tires per package. But look how skinny they look!!!! (top left - wrapped in plastic)

I swear I thought they sent me motorcycle tires. I double checked the tires labels, and indeed they are 5.60/13 tires. These tires look so skinny you could probably fit two of them under each wheel! Dually roadster anyone?

Unless I am completely wacked out, those ain't panasports. They sure look like two piece Empi wheels to me! I would trade my 5 Libre wheels for a set of 4 of those...

Most folks don't realize just how skinny the stock roadster tires truly were. Now those will get a little wider on the wheel with air, but not a whole lot! The stock roadster size for the 1600s and 2000s is 5.60x14 - same width, just an inch bigger in diameter. Some road tests suggest that a 6.45x14 was optional...

You are right...Those are a set of rare Empi 2 piece wheels that Dan @ DGR is selling.

Like you said ...those original roadster tires were quite skinny. You can see why rims like the empis pictured next to the skinny tires were used by many of the roadster racers. Running such a wider rim/tire combo must have been a monumental improvement for race handling.
