Well, I did something stupid then something fun. But first I have a short story ........
My son is 15 and will have his permit in a couple of months and for some reason he's been asking a lot of questions about how a clutch works and how a manuel transmission works.
So, this weekend he asked me can I start in second gear or third gear and I explained yes but it adds strain to the clutch assembly, engine and transmission and why. He then asked me a question I never considered before. Can you start in fifth gear? Hmmmmm, I never thought about it and certainly never tried it in all of my years of driving so I pulled over.
Now, I'm not a complete idiot so I knew to NOT rev the engine too high and my KA has enough torque to get the job done so I continued with my experiment.
The KA performed exactly like she should have, the car did excel to 25 mph with the clutch fully engaged. The rpm was very low as expected and I got to share with my son a safe yet stupid experiment.
I did this a couple blocks from my home so I didn't think about it but went straight home and put datster in the garage. This is when we both noticed the nastiest smell ever. There is no denying my experiment wasn't over and I had to explain the possible damage I just caused. Describing to him what may have happened to the clutch was hard for me to say and hard for me to hear myself say. I didn't sleep well that night.
I got out of bed about 4:30 because I had to see if I burned up my clutch and if it was slipping. (Now for the fun part) once the engine temp was normal and everything worked well shifting wise in my neighborhood I decided to find a lonely road for a burnout. Well, the clutch is fine and there are some beautiful burnout marks that I get to see everyday going to work.
Experiment concluded. :D

Your son sounds exactly the same way I sounded when I asked my dad to teach me how to drive manual.

Odd coincidence, my dad also did a burnout right after teaching me how to drive. :smt044

Keep up the good relation with your son!

That door panel, well actually all of it, looks really sharp. is the door panel a custom?

Door panel is stock but I did the top and bottom in contrasting charcoal.

Cut out the metal behind the passenger rear wheel, primed the nastiness behind it, now I'm just waiting for the epoxy to dry so I can put my new(old) metal on and the passenger 1/4 will be rust free!

Put the blocks on my body stand to hold the body down, put together my new engine hoist and blasted the idler housing clean. Not much but at least something.
66 stroker, almost done.
67 basket case, paint coming soon.

Reassembly continues...

Hung boiled gas tank and fuel lines, installed new master cylinders and all brake lines and the clutch line, installed new slave, installed ebrake. Put in steering column, radiator/shroud overflow bottle, washer bottle, etc. Cleaned and refurbished heater box and wiper motor and installed, working on dash on bench, to be installed next.

Had to put a couple of "finish" pieces on the car for visual progress so hung the tail lights, headlights, parking lights and put on freshly crinkle coated cam cover. Progress is good, long ways to go yet. Paul

I dig the black cover with the off white/yellow (?) car color. And what, are you all on meth? Seems like I set out to do something that I think will take a couple hrs and I'm 1/2 way done 8 hrs later!

Just lots and lots of coffee... Maybe a PBR or two at the end of the day

Color is off white, fluorescent lights kind of give it a yellowish tint in pics. Actual color is olde english white from early 60's jags and mg's. It's single stage, guy in portland really knows how to lay down paint

Thanks Greg! Pushing to get dash and wiring in so I can install header, intake and restored Mikunis. Really want to see those bad boys hanging off the side as then I'll be close to firing it for the first time! Paul
