SPL31104416. The Alvin Style Hardtop Roadster Report

Post by ted heaton »

FULL report on the DROPS retrieval of SPL31104416 with the
"Alvin Style" hardtop with roof cat option.

What better way to spend a wet Wednesday than retrieving a roadster.
Dave (Pebbles) took his enclosed trailer as he had cash and meant business.

1966 roadster #4416 with low #(3318) 2000 A cam non smog head motor and 5 speed.
The upper chain tensioner foot was holding the cam cover on! Not a good sign for the engine internal condition
and chain was no where to be seen!. Cam looked in good shape. Original cast exhaust manifold.
The hardtop was in good condition with couple of surface stress cracks and 1 cracked side window.
Hard top is already spoken for if Dave decides to sell it.
Body in terrible rusty condition. RF fender may be useable.
A couple of odd mods were discovered.
Seat were fiberglass buckets from 63-64 1500. In good condition.
67.5 2000 Tach and Speedo. NICE.
Nice horn button.
Wheels were Z steel wheels and Hubcaps.
Wet steep hill retrieval went well with sellers Land Rover pulling the roadster with no problem.
Seller had NO knowledge of roadsters and did have a non running high windshield under a tarp.
The Roof Cat had disappeared.
Stopped at the Willow and Jim's Country Cafe for and appropriate lunch of biscuits and gravy!
As is proper for Roadster fanatics we scraped and cleaned to get the numbers. No Vin plate.

A successful roadster rescue with parts worth more than the price. Body will not survive.

Here are a few pictures and a link to the entire episode.

Ted,

Does the 5 speed have a home? If not I'd consider adoption.

Garth,
you must really want a 5 speed. Not 1 but 2 posts!.
Sorry, I believe Dave has plans to use it.

Two posts? You must be seeing double!

I am looking for a candidate U20 and 5 speed for this winter's project. So if you find something rebuildable I'd be interested.

I immediately saw the rare ROPE START Option which everyone instantly recalls as 28200-16192, never before seen in North America.

Oh, wait, that's an oil tensioner.

never mind

Land Rover - Bah! That's a Toyota Landcruiser - aka the best roadster hauler (I used mine to haul out SLR311-00132) :-)

Good find!

What an adventure! Thanks for the report. That is the best condition hardtop I've seen! We know it is a "thompson" top but is there any id stickers/plate on the top itself?

super score on the 67 SRL gauges!!
way to rescue :D

Alvin,
as much as I love (NOT!) roadster hardtops, this style is the best looking.
Even the inside lining was in good shape.
Looked for a tag/sticker but found nothing but the wasp nest!

James,
Good call on the tow vehicle. I thought he said it was Land Rover but obviously not.
Very impressive towing though. Did not slip once up the steep wet grass.

As a hater of tops, hard or soft, if I were to have one this would be it, and would probably like it but hopefully never use it... doesn't make much sense, does it, but that's the way my brain works...

Love the rope start! Says "non smog head" but I see some smog equipment on it? Good salvage on the 67 2000 guages!

That looks like a modified water tube to the heater control, not smog equipment.

Good score on the car!!!

Extra Credit to Bob2.
The piping is a Leigh Brooks, "Shifty", approved sweated copper pipe and hose clamp "special" to the heater.
Greg is getting on in years and his eyesight is failing!

Fun to follow a field recovery...let me know if the n/s head goes up for sale. That top is nice looking and as Alvin's looks great with matching body color.
