Re: 68 SPL31117895 at the Amelia Island auction March 7
This car is much more "correct" than the Barrett Jackson car, from my recollection, although neither are perfectly "original" examples, or for that matter as close to "original" as is implied. Not that I think that is a bad thing, but shows that a lack of familiarity is still prevalent in the elite circles...
I think this should be worth $40k at least if the Barrett Jackson car was $33k... although I have a profound bias to the red interior...

Just remember it takes 2 bidders to get a number.. When the bus sold for $198k, the only reason was because some other guy was willing to pay $197k..

Re: 68 SPL31117895 at the Amelia Island auction March 7
It's a well put together car, does have a 5 speed, but done right. While not original, it makes the car, IMHO, more sellable and more useable and adds value rather than lowering it. I saw the car in every stage of the restoration, and Ed is beyond meticulous, no shortcuts. There isn't a part, nut or bolt on the car that wasn't checked and cleaned or replaced with the proper part. Can't wait to see the current project, 67 1600 stroker.
Under the paint the body is prepped correctly. If I remember right, the car was totally rust free, but had a long storage in a barn or garage, so some small dents, but no damage or rustouts. He has incredible chrome and cad plating, which really shows well. Interior and top are perfect. He shows the car AACA, which is pretty picky and it's won an award at every show it's been to. Ed made my Wife very happy, every time we saw each other he was taking parts from my garage.
I can confirm he was the Captain Lawrence Brewing Company Best in Show winner and that Biker Mike, Datsun1500, Nats226ny, GeorgeH, myself, and others personally drank his prize.

The $50,600 includes the auction house commission.
So what is that? Selling price of about $45,000.? YIKES.
I hear that Bob2 just increased the price on his recent 67.5 restoration by 30%!.
I am going to get my can of car wax right now.
Roadster values going UPPP!

Re: 68 SPL31117895 at the Amelia Island auction March 7
Yowsa, that's a record...not even a '67 SRL.
Ted may need to sweeten the pot for his "Ultimate Roadster" hunt.
Hopefully the new owner will drive it and some of us will see it on the road or at events.
When I was at Watkins Glen last year a few of the guys asked me how do the East Coast cars compare to the West Coast cars. There's your answer, the market has spoken.
Yes, but we get to drive ours more months out of the year.
Congrats to Ed and to the buyer. Can't wait to see Ed's next project. I'd gladly enjoy drinking some of his next prize.

That is so awesome! The car sold for $50,600 - THAT is the selling price. Because Ed got a little less because of the auction fees and commission doesn't mean that someone didn't pay $50,600 for the car right???
Cheers

Gee, maybe the guy who recently listed one on the Tulsa Craigslist for $25,000 isn't as crazy as I thought! Mike

^wow! nice find Mike! That's incredible to see. Is it me or are there ALOT of white/bald heads in there?
Yeah totally man where's Bob?
Makes you wonder what a '67 2000 would have fetched, or a visually stock SPL, etc.

I don't think Bob is going to sell his car. At least not right now anyways. we have had many discussions on what number would make him sell, and in the end, he always comes back with I want to enjoy it for awhile. And after all the time, and hard work that he put into the re build, I would be saying the exact same thing. now if I get lucky and hit the power ball, Bob will be made an offer he can't refuse.

Alvin,
I wonder the same thing. my car 218 is not stock, but can be really easy. I chromed what Datsun did not. So.........do I leave it as I built her, or spend a weekend or two going back stock??? And I noticed the Amelia car only had 1,000 miles since build???? Wow, I do drive mine, and does that affect price?

Re: 68 SPL31117895 at the Amelia Island auction March 7
I don't think it would have done much more if it was a 2000, even a 67. At that level of restoration, any Roadster will get in that range. A no excuses car, is a no excuses car. The buyer got one of the nicest Datsun Roadster out there, i bet they didn't care it was "only" a high windshield 1600.
The problem now is everyone that sees that will think any Roadster is worth a bunch of $$ and try to sell theirs for dumb money, and wonder why they did not get it.
If Bobs 67 2000 was worth $50k last week, the fact that this one sold for $45k does not make his car suddenly worth $75k, his is still a $50k car.

I remember when no one wanted the 1500s......
