Re: New afeter market Steroes
Since I got the JBL Flip last year there has been alot of bluetooth speakers coming on the market. Check them out at Bestbuy. I ordered from Amazon. I love the Flip speaker for its portability and good sound.
As for a stereo I would only use a inexpensive one to avoid theft, but likely the AM and bluetooth system are all I need.

I have the "Big Jawbone" bluetooth speaker and it is awesome. I can hear and enjoy music while cruising down the freeway at 70 - it's pretty cool.

I kept my original am radio in the normal spot and had my new stereo mounted in the glovebox. They removed the glovebox and I kept it. Then they ran a usb cord into my ashtray so I can use my ipod right there. This way I have the original look whenever I want.

Re: New afeter market Steroes
no Richard, the caliper has a huge front.
And it doesn't fit, or you have to cut the radio cutout.
For the 66,67 type's you need a mini DIN.

Re: New afeter market Steroes
Thanks to all with their suggestions. PO installed a Pioneer cassette radio. Would like to keep the classic look with modern functions, usb, mp3, etc. I have found a possible fit but it has low watts in my opinion http://www.vintagecarradio.com/store/pr ... ts_id=2580" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; any opinions would be appreciated.

It was a Momo knob on a cut down stick, I really liked it, should have kept it.peter wrote:Dave, that looks like a bimmer shiftknob
Mike, the DIN radio may be too big for the dash and/or require a big hole to be cut, 7.2 x2.11 inches. What year is your car?

Dave, its '67 low windshield. So the RetroSound Zuma drops straight in? Will check that one out. Thanks

the RetroSound Zuma drops straight in, with the frequencies protector he looks like a real old skoal radio.
Think about the mini DIN. you can see it at my picture.

Re: New afeter market Steroes
I will be keeping the stock AM radio. Over the weekend I finished up my "re-furb" of the OEM speaker box. Stripped, primed and painted the box; sourced a replacement 6", 4 ohm speaker off the web (from a site that has replacement speakers for video game consoles!); assembled it all together and mounted it. The biggest pain was mounting the box back onto the interior firewall. First tried "feeling my way" with the mounting screws to the bracket - no joy. Ended up taking out the battery and removing the coil inside the engine compartment, removing the bracket, assemble bracket to the box, then mount the whole thing. Sounds great with the stock AM radio.
For some nice tunes I am going to source an MP3 amplifier and a bluetooth "receiver" to go with it. I can then stream via bluetooth music from my iPhone (pretty much any audio source, including Pandora) or my iPod Touch. The MP3 unit has a volume control that I may mount where the cigarette lighter socket is in the center console. Still debating speaker locations for that. I have some surface mount 4" two-way speakers on the kick panels in front; a couple of 6x9's in boxes on the rear shelf are a possible addition for fuller bass...

Re: New afeter market Steroes
They usually call it a mini or sub mini shaft mount. Believe it's the same as late 60's VW and 60's-70's MG. I'll see if I can find some kind of standard.mjh65230 wrote:Dave, its '67 low windshield. So the RetroSound Zuma drops straight in? Will check that one out. Thanks

Re: New afeter market Steroes
New development! Hidden and not a "put together" system.
This is a Kicker part, self contained Ipod control and amp or pre-amp. About $125.00 ready to go.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0078FVV4Y/

Remote skould be easy enough to mount.
The RetroSound classic at $159.00 is also a choice, if they have a compatible bezel.
Also found this on Amazon, cheap at $6.99 easy solution to control the ipod if you have an Aux in, like the RetroSound and no ipod control, and want it removable
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003SX0O34

I think I'll try the Kicker and report.
Question for those who do this stuff., how big a difference in volume would I see with 2 ohm vs. 4 ohm speakers? I think it would be significant, but not sure.

Re: New afeter market Steroes
OK, kicker is in, total stealth except the speakers. Took 2 days, I have a few herniated disks, so bending under the dash is no fun. Sounds nice.
Kicker unit. Made for motorcycles and ATV's Fits up on top of factory radio with commercial doiuble stick Remote unit in factory ashtray. Had to cut a hole for the wire, again, double stick. Ashtray back in console without the trim. Trim back on and repainted. Cover closed, covers it all. Speakers behind the seat, had to enlarge factory holes a bit. Smaller speakers would have been simpler. Monster amp ready to go back up under dash. I've had this one for years, sounds nice. Final install. Have to find a place for the cruise switch, next project. Overall, sound is really good, controls ipod well. It turns on at a preset volume, about 10%, which is good and controls the amp, so no popping. Turns off about 10 seconds after the ignition is turned off.It has another aux input for a phone or Ipad.
To make it perfect, it could use a small passive EQ, as there is no tone control, but sound is fine.
I ran it without the amp first, and it sounded good, would be better with 2 ohm speakers. I already had the amp installed, so I connected it in. Much louder and heavier bass. EQ in the glove would be next.
Total cost about $185.00 without the existing amp, $125.00 for Kicker IPOD control/amp unit, and $60.00 for Kicker.
Normally fit people could do the same install in a few hours, variable being the speakers.

Dave that is one slick install! Looks great and I like the fact that the controller is so well hidden but yet so accessible!
Quick question, can the controller control an iPhone 5 with the new apple plug?
