rx-7 LSD emergency brake ?

Post by dynaguy »

I'm trying to figure out the best way to make the rx7 rear end caliper emergency brake brackets work with the linkage from the stock system. I do have the Mazda cables. Any ideas from fellow swappers? TIA Pat Mahoney

Take a 1 inch hole saw and retract the piolt bit back in till the teeth go against the oem cable bracket on the ebrake shaft . Start to cut the bracket off after you have started to cut bracket keep retracting piolt drill bit (You dont want to drill thur the center of shaft) untill you have removed cable bracket . all you have is the shaft .Make some tear drop brackets drill the center for the shaft and one for the rod end pin. Shorten the rods and weld ends back on .Then have the tear drops tig welded once you have them indexed . only welding a little at a time and cool them right away, also cover rubber boot from weld spatter .

Thanks Michael,

Getting excited, bringing the body home from paint this Friday, weather permitting. Lots to do but might have a driver this summer!

Michael, I'm interested as well. I'm lovin' my RX axle but have needed an e-brake on a few occasions.

Thanks,
Gary

It's 2018, do you have a solution to this?

Michael, at that time, had had an adapter made that needed to be welded on to modify the rear calipers. Then modification of the OEM rod that goes between right and left calipers is necessary. My issue is that I did not have the OEM "loop" welded to my rx7 punkin. The rod is contained in that loop, preventing it from bowing out when e-brake is applied. Since I had my rear end housing powder coated prior to this knowledge, my e-brake is basically non-functional. Might try to find a super epoxy to glue one on, if I decide the wheel chocks aren't doing the job.

FWIW

I have the OEM loop welded in to the diff, but the cable running to the next piece of the brake hardware with the two cables connecting to it (one to the brake handle and one to the back part the holds the rods.) the middle piece lets call it, rubs against the differential bottom when up on the lift but does not when off the lift. So to set the tension on the cable the car needs to be on the ground and if lifted the cable may get too tight and have issues. I may extend the bracket that holds the middle pieces bracket to lower the cable.
