Early U-20 engine numbers

Post by cole455 »

After looking through the registry it looks like U-20 1542 is the highest numbered block in a 67.5 2000. I know datsun was fairly random with engine selection -- are there any instances of a block with a lower number leaving the factory in a 68?

When I purchased SRL3115020 eight years ago its engine was U20 0645. There is no way to determine if it left the factory with that engine but I highly doubt it given the diversity of components from different years both on the car and engine. I represent the car as a 69 body on a 68 chassis with a 67.5 engine.

I understand that all 1968 SRLs delivered to Canada had the 150hp U20 as did SRs to Australia. This would suggest the lowest numbered U20 engine in a 68 model might be a Canadian or Australian car. I am sure one of the more recognized Datsun archivists can provide more insight into the question.

I'll ask a friend of mine if he kept a record as to the engine number in his non-US '68 Solex SRL that was brought back from Japan by a US Air Force man. It could be one of the earliest high-windshield jobs with a U20.

I believe there are photos of the 150 HP plate on the top of the firewall. Someone on this board now has that car -- may chime in too.

Japanese RHD cars have no block number stamped on the ID tag. Do Ozzie cars have engine number stamped on ID tag?

my latest 150 hp 68 is SRL311-04944 with U20-06266

That engine most likely came out of a fairly early 67.5 2000 - between VIN 267 and 277. I base that on the registry at Datsun.org which has VIN and Engine numbers for many 67.5 2000s.

I'm putting block #826 in car 42. After looking at the registry I have no idea what car it came out of since the numbers jump around so much. The closest match I could find was car 443 with engine 830 but car 440 has #763...

So, are we starting a registry? If so, SRL311-00588 came with engine #1000, but currently has #540 since at least the early '80s, likely '70s some where.
