5 speed

Post by RockFish »

Yes, it works - The 5 speed was originally an option for the 1600's

Looks like you got just about everything on your list, do you have this ? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DATSUN-R ... 1487QQrdZ1 Sometimes it's already attached to the trans. I don't know this person, nor am I selling this, just seemed like an easy way to link to a picture.

If your swapping the trans, you're getting a new clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing anyway, right ? . Folks on here can probably tell you what type of heavy duty/performance type clutches they've used and liked. You can check the pics/desciptions on this vendor site for the clutch stuff as well - See what can be used on what - http://www.datsunparts.com/Clutch

You would need some sort of replacement for the plate around the shifter as well (the hole is in a slightly different place with the 5 speed)[/img]

I could be wrong, but I believe that you are mistaken Rockfish. The 5 speed was only delivered in the 2000s. The 1600s all got 4 speeds. For racing, the 5 speed is an allowed upgrade.

Joaquin, You can keep the clutch disc and pressure plate that are on your 1600. You will need the 2000 throwout bearing assembly, clutch fork, transmission, engine back plate, transmission mount, transmission crossmember, driveshaft and possibly the speedometer cable (some folks have been able to reroute their 1600 unit and use it I am told.) Since your car is a 67.5, it should all bolt right in. You will need either a 5 speed shift plate (out of a 67.5 2000 no less) or a reproduction of one. The good news is that your shift lever and knob can be retained!

My personal opinion is that if you are driving mainly around town, stick with the 4 speed. If you do a lot of long distance driving the 5 speed may be nice for the overdrive, but it is certainly not mandatory. I have driven many 1600s at 90+ MPH for hours on end with NO problems using the 4 speed. Yes, the engine is winding up a little more, but it is not a big issue.

Thats good that I can keep my clutch stuff. Since it has less than 3,000 miles. I have already found the toke and the cross member, and the backing plate. Still need to locate the throwout bearing the shaft and so on.

Sid I do understand what you mean but I dont really like pushing the motor that much well i just dont feel comfortable doing so.

5 speed option ?

Post by RockFish »

Hmmm, not sure where I got the info any more, but somewhere, somehow I got the impression that starting 67.5 the 5 speed was an option avail. for the 1600. Not terribly important, but out of curiosity, does anyone know for sure ?

All of the factory literature shows that the 1600s were delivered with 4 speeds and the 2000s were delivered with 5 speeds. Dealers may have done some goofy stuff - one in Australia put a 2000 and 5 speed into a Silvia to sell it. From the factory though, it was not done that way.

The 67.5 has a unique cut out in the transmission tunnel. Either the 4 speed or 5 speed fits through the hole. all earlier cars have to have the tunnel cut to fit the 5 speed as well as later 1600s. Conversely, later 2000s have to have the tunnel cut to fit the 4 speed. The difference is in the location of the shifter.

Some of the magazine articles incorrectly suggested that the 5 speed was optional on the 1600 back in late 67. Perhaps that is where you saw it.

No problem! One thing about these cars is that there is almost NOTHING that is constant. Nissan changed darned near everything. Often multiple times. Here is an interesting one for you. For the 67.5 cars, headrests are optional equipment. I have seen examples of two different kinds! The difference is in the pan that covers the back mounting area. Most are held on with only one screw that goes perpendicular to the headrest posts. I have a set that has the rear panel held on with two screws that go down vertically between the headrest posts. Now, I can see the reason for that change - the ones that I have are a PITA to deal with, but other changes are bizarre.

There is a crossmember on Ebay now, I just cut and welded the 1600 crossmember on mine, 7/8" shorter if I recall correctly.
Also, the Urethane trans mount for a Chevy automatic fits with very minor modification, $25.00 at PepBoys and rated for 800 horsepower!! I'll send pics if you are interested.
I also have a spare 5 speed driveshaft if you need one.

My 2000 had a 4 speed when I got it, so I was converting back to 5 speed.
