1500 and 1600 tranny the same?
Does anyone know if the transmission from a 1500 can be connected to a stroked 1600?

It can be connected if you mix the right parts, but why? The shifter comes out in a different location, the driveshaft is different. The lack of synchros and available spares makes it problematic.

I'm guessing you could probably sell the 1500 engine and tranny for more than what a 4-speed will cost, and I've seen 4-speed transmissions as cheap as "free-to-whomever-wants-to-come-get-it".
Several people have commented that the tranny will fit in a large Rubbermaid container so you can ship it Greyhound (also cheap).
The lack of a 1600 tranny shouldn't stop you.

If it's an SPL311 and they didn't modify the transmission tunnel, I think it's a 1600 transmission. The 1500 has a large protrusion that the gear shift attaches to. Another way to tell for sure - get under the car and look tail end of the transmission. If the shifter is held on by a small cylinder that just barely juts out above and back of the transmission, it's a 1600. If not sure, take a picture while you're under there and post it.
I spoke to the owner of the car and the 1600 transmission is still in the car. When he did the swap for the 1500 he put a brand new clutch in. It was soon after that when the engine developed a knock. I'm still going to have the transmission taken apart and looked at to ensure the drivetrain is solid.
