New Roadster owner

Post by nocreativity »

Hi I recently purchased a Datsun 2000- 1968. I have read a lot and even bought some parts from individuals here on the boards. Just saying hi and I live in Dallas Texas.. I really like the looks of the Fairlady. I saw one about 8 months ago on the street in Dallas and have been looking ever since. So I 'settled' on a 64 austin healy sprite about a month ago from Illnois. Then I saw the car, still kind of looking, a Datsun 2000 that was clean and affordable so I bought it in a small town in Arkansas. Selling the Healey now.

Here is a picture of it

Thanks

That is a very nice looking roadster. Well done, and welcome to the 311s.org community.

Just about everything you could want to know is known here, almost always by someone other than me.

But, I am a fan.

Yes I like it very much. Currently it's sitting in my parents garage in Oklahoma. My dad's tinkering with it. The cars body seems to be in good condition--no rust -- a few normal dings. The back bumper was terrible I bought another back bumper from Marc out of Upstate New York as well as a another driver side mirror. Mine was broken. The top is awful. Need a new one. Missing the jack

The interior could use some work--dash is all cracked up--it has a dash cover. Center Console is not up to par and the ash try* and other metal piece* could use some work. Nothing Major. Needs an upper boot bought a lower boot from

Mechnically I think it could use some work. It runs but not great in my opinion. When starting the engine rocks a lot. Apparently when these 'shade tree mechanic' had the engine rebuilt by a professional they installed it themselves and did not replace the motor mounts (Bush league if you ask me). The shifting is not a clean I as like. My Healey shifts much better.

But in all my research and looking at prices I have gotten pretty good at finding a 'deal' and I only paid $6500 --which i think is pretty good. So I would not feel bad putting some money in the engine compartment.

I think the steering gear box might be going bad. Need another opinion. I read on here before buying the car about the 1 inch of play in the steering wheel it has more like 2 inches i would say.

Parts I am looking for, ashtray thingy and the metal tray. If I can get running like I would like it would be Great!

The carbs are likely out of balance. It will run much better when they are, best done using a unisyn or the preferred "snail" one that doesn't slow down air flow when measuring (search Internet, or someone will post). The engine should be desmogged if it isn't already, and then it will perform as designed. Requires a recurved distributor, or better yet get the electronic one offered by folks on this forum. Engine mounts are easy to replace if needed.

Search this forum for how to do the above, as at the moment I don't have time to write it all out again! Welcome! I suggest obtaining a manual if you have not already and reading through it to understand the car etc. These are very reliable but they do require mechanical knowledge at times.

Regarding shifting, adjust the clutch, may need to be bled, check trans oil. I recently switched to Swepco gear oil as suggested by Will, and while expensive at $65 a gallon my stick shift doesn't get hot anymore and the syncros like it!

Welcome nice car. Keep asking questions and the answers so far have been spot on.
I have owned 59 and 62 AH and these cars have a full frame a lot more power. Enjoy the ride!
