Hello,
I finally realized a long standing dream this weekend with the purchase of a 1966 spl-311. The body is in great shape, no rust and runs like a dream. Heres my problem: The stock 4-speed transmission is leaking like a sive. I thought that I read somewhere once that the 5-speed out of a 280zx bolts right in. I looked all over and can't find anything about this again. Was I dreaming? I would shurly appreciate any light anybody can shine on this for me. Thanks,
Chris M.

Chris,
That is incorrect. The starter is on the wrong side. A 5 speed from a 2000 fits, but some modifications need to be made to the transmission tunnel. The mount needs to be "adjusted" and the driveshaft changed. You will also need to cut a hole in the tunnel for the shifter and at least reverse the shifter trim plate (or buy a replacement from Stan Chernoff if he still has them) as the 5 speed is different.
If it is leaking, find out where. It could just be the bottom pan or the rear seal - both of which can be replaced with it still in the car....

thanks for the info. I wasn't sure how/if the starter position problem would be delt with. It is the rear of the transmission that is leaking (around the output shaft) is there a page/site/past discussion that addresses how to tackle this problem without having to pull the trans out? Thanks again for your time. - Chris M

I know that it has been discussed, but don't recall where. As I recall, you can use the very tip of the yoke to pop out the old seal. The seals should be readily available from the vendors.

RE:Tranny Rear Seal
The tranny rear seal can be popped out and replaced once you remove the drive shaft. It is probably one of the easier things you can replace on a roadster tranny.

Hey Chris,
If I remember from my 510 days, the zx tranny is a bolt up to your L series in your 510. That might be where you are remembering it from.
I agree with Steve, the rear seal is very easy to replace. If you can borrow time on a lift it will be really easy. Make sure the driveshaft surface is in good shape, too.
A lot of roadsters leak from the front of the differental. That is a bit more difficult to change and is sometimes confused with a tranny leak. It is a good idea to change the oil in both when you replace that seal.

Thanks for all the help! I really appreciate it. There is definately seems to be a whole different scene/ comorodery with roadster folks than with 510ers. I would eventually like to go through the whole car but the trans will definately take priority right now. It might have to wait untill the weekend though. Thanks again for all the responses.
