Interchangable Bearings

Post by desmith »

In the process of doing a total restoration of my 1970 2000, I discovered the 5 speed transmission had two bad bearings. Since the locacation of the bad bearings reqired a total dismantling of the tranny, I decided to replace all the bearing if they could be secured through my local parts store. Using the references listed in the tech section article on bearing interchangeability, I went to the local Auto Value Parts Store.

The following 7 bearings were purchased and installed. The manufacture is National Mogul. These are the 'ball' bearings not the 'needle' bearings.
Part # (UPC number) Quantity Price (each)
306-L (7 24956 08828 7) 2 .... $ 30.71
304 .. (7 24866 08780 8) 1 .... $ 18.83
205 .. (7 24956 06843 2) 3 .... $ 13.88
204 .. (7 24956 06782 4) 1 .... $ 9.48

223540 (7 24956 07476 1) 1 ... $ 6.15 ( Rear Oil Seal)

I have not been able to put the tranny through the paces yet, as the car is only about 60% complete. Now that the tranny is rebuilt, I can afix it to the newly rebuilt U20 and bolt it to the fully restored frame. Once the drivetrain is in place the body will be replaced on the frame and painted. Previously the body was stripped to bare metal and all body work completed. I hope to have the car at the 2014 Solvang meet.

I will update this post once the car is drivable and the tranny gets a road test. All the bearings were checked with micrometers and measured out identical and installed just fine.

I hope this helps someone along the way.

Thanks for the .02. The underside, fender wells and engine bay of the body are already painted. I need to set the body on the frame to properly allign doors and fenders. All precautions will be taken to protect the frame and drivetrain from over spray. I certainly do not want teal over spray on the gloss black powercoated frame or other parts.
