Replacing Valves

I'm rebuilding the engine of my 68 1600. It's been sitting for a couple of decades so I'm planning on changing out just about everything. Does anyone know if replacing the exhaust/intake valves are a do it in the garage type of thing or do I have to send it out? I can't remember how much I did myself last time.

You could do it at home but it does not cost that much for a shop to do a complete valve job. Granted if you replace all of the valves that might add up rather quickly. The last head I had done cost me $125.00. I would recommend taking it to a local shop.

Just a suggestion........
If you take it to a shop , make sure they don't shave it unless they talk to you a before they try to clean up the face.
Also, make sure you measure the head thickness and check the flatness with a straightedge before you give it to them and specify the maximum amount they can take off if they require.

Thanks for the reminder. That's why I had to replace the head way back when. I think I'll send it out.

I just dont want anyone to have to go thru what I have been since the local shop shaved my head.
Pain in the butt to get the engine temp down and hard to keep the head torqued down.
I might have to regrind and cc the head to get the compression back down if a new gasket doesn't maintain a better seal.
In retrospect, I should have gone to the flat top pistons when I rebuilt the motor.
