Steering ujoint with zerk

Has anyone ever tapped a ujoint cap to put a zerk in?

Has a steering joint ever failed due to lack of lubrication?

Even if it did start to fail, how many decades would it take before it became an issue?

Well it's probably got 40 yrs so far, so might be time to either grease or get a new one but the early ujoint is NLA. Anyone find a substitute?

Steering shaft U-Joint? If so, the later model 311 take the same a Kawasaki today:

One would have to tap all 4, assuming the joint isn't hollow.

The ones I put in the back were hollow , so they had 1 zerk ea. do you think the steering u joint is solid?

We tried to drill some drive shaft caps to lube them at nissan in the 70,s on other datsuns but a cobalt drill would not even cut as they are very hardened might work if you can but be care ful you do not get a burr inside the joint, mine looks as it needs a greasing too
should be a hollow + ,thats how they are machined

I believe it is. However, I hav'nt cut one in half yet. It seems to be a part that is never included with the "bundles".

The U looks wide enough to press it out and service it.

Anyone have an old Type A steering u joint that they can check to see if it is solid or hollow in the cross ?

I've gotten the little u-joints out, so the bigger ones should be easier, in theory, if they aren't staked in place. I would try on a spare.

I doubt Nissan just dreamed up dimensions a part they could buy, so it must fit something else. It's probably that nobody had needed to look hard enough to find out what yet. If you get the dimensions and get on some of the Asian manufacturing sites, 99% chance you will find them. Now getting them here and in your hand is another story.
