1969 Steering Column Surround Screw Size?
Anybody know what size and pitch the three screws that hold the surround are? I think it is some oddball metric size with a very fine thread. Nothing at the Ace Hardware matches it though. Thanks,
Mike

4mm x 60 should work well in a pinch. 4 mm is Not overly tight. Thread pitch 60 is very very very close. There is a conversion chart posted somewhere in this abyss.

Does that mean you got the surround to fit back on?

I'd love to know - though of course in such a low stress situation, retapping to a known size might make some sense if these screws are unobtanium and they seem to be.

I did, through the judicious use of a belt sander, dremel tool, vice grips and cuss words. Not in that order. I am slowly beating the Blue Bitch into submission. Will most likely catch on fire just to spite me when I start it up at the rate this build is going.shifty wrote:Does that mean you got the surround to fit back on?

I believe the surround screws are 4-40 and not metric. A lot of the body components were still in SAE even though the engine and tranny is metric. The entire conversion was not final until the Datsun 240Z came along.

The thread size for this is 3.5mm dia with a .6mm pitch.
You can buy on ebay as a cap screw but I have also just purchased some that have a cheese head screw, when they arrive I can confirm that they fit and where to buy them.
Cheers Rob

Re: 1969 Steering Column Surround Screw Size?
Hi Guys,
I know it has taken a while but today the screws arrived from the UK, they are 3.5mmx 0.6 pitch metric machine screws with a cheesehead.
Here is a link to where I bought mine.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-5mm-x-50mm ... 3cc7472da4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The on es I bought are 50mm long which it too long they only need to be 15mm long but these can be shortened easily.I took my cover off tonigh and checked that the thread is correct and the cheesehead fits nicely as well.
Cheers Rob
