How should a hydraulic master cylinder be stored for future use?

Clean it out REALLY well with brake cleaner to get all that hydraulic fluid out. Then, give it a light but thorough coating of a light sprayable oil. Throw it in a ziplock bag, and call it good.

Get it absolutely clean and then go to Napa. They have a silicone assembly grease that is made just for brake parts iirc. Unless I am mistaken, that is what new and rebuilt units use...

I may be wrong on it being silicone. When you get a brake rebuild kit, there is a small package of the grease in there. It is usually a red color or at least in a red bag. The Napa guys should be able to point you the way...

Moisture = corrosion. Dot 3,4 absorbs moisture. Silicone won't mix with it. Plus it wont eat your paint! I have been using silicone fluid brake and clutch for years. Just bleed them annually to remove any contaminates.

Parafin wax (or candle wax) can be used to coat.
Steam clean, boil off or solvent clean before putting back into service.
