Phantom Grip? Limited Slip Diff. application...

Post by TR »

Does anyone have experience with Phantom Grip products?

www.phantomgrip.com

They say they can fit their unit for a nominal fee since they do not stock one already. They do have units for the Z and 510, though...

Worth the money?

Wow, that looks like something that may be worth looking into. The price is fairly reasonable. What do they need to give a quote?

They told me $300 a ways back. Just need to send them the differential. I would send them mine, but I would like a spare...

I would also like to upgrade my rear axle assy on the 66 to a newer unit with a torque strut...

Anyone have one they would like to sell?

RE:Phantomgrip LSD

Post by S Allen »

Well, we certainly are not going to find an LSD differential for $300 for our roadsters. That is a fair price. I do not have a spare to sell but I have a spare I could send to them. Where are they located? I guess I should go to the web site and take a peek. Is there any one else interested in this? I would like to put one in the race car and for that price I might be able to afford it.
Thanks for sharing this little jewel of a find.

I found them in one of those dorky "tuner" mags. From their site and other references, they seem to really hold up and do well.

That is a good reason not to be in Cincinatti...It may help you fit into your race leathers, though...>>TR

I'm interested. I think I can even scrounge up a 3.9 or a 3.7 diff as well. $300 is far better than $1000+ for the roadster LSD.

3.9, 3.7???

Post by TR »

Do you have an extra I could purchase? I would like to go to a 3.9, maybe even 3.7...

Depending on the tracks you race at, are you sure you would want to get away from a 4.11?

We may be able to get a discount if we get a few done at the same time...?

I don't know if I can sell the 3.7. I am splitting a parts car with a friend, I think he might want the diff, the 3.9 is in a car at the moment. I would love to get my 4.11 converted, however that is in a car as well, so I really don't have any spares. If your car has a diff, it is most likely a 3.9. With the added power of the SR20DET, a 3.7 would be sweet. One place you might try to find an extra diff is on www.risensonracing.com. Those guys all have track cars and are doing some really cool stuff with there suspension. Someone over there might have an extra 3.7 that they would be willing to sell. Chris Coker runs the site.

3.7, 3.9, 4.11

Ahh, I thought the stock was 4.11. I guess I will have to tear into it and find out!

I'm not looking to go a million miles an hour, as long as the revs are not too far up when I am cruising on the freeway, I will be happy. I need to check what the final drive on the 5 speed with the SR motor is...

Does your parts car have the entire rear axle assy in it? Think you guys would like to sell it? Like I said I am looking for a complete torque strut equipped axle assy to limit wheel hop...I might have to make a trip up to Lake County for one...

Rear end

Post by SLOroadster »

I'll ask and see. We are pulling the car apart this weekend. I think Lake County is about as far away as San Luis Obispo from you. The parts car is a 68 2000, and It does have the torque bar assembly on it. As far as being wound out, my car is turning about 4200 Rpms at around 75, makes 5th almost a decent passing gear. I have 185/60/14 tires as well. I think the 3.7 is closer to 3300 at 75. The 4.11 MIGHT have been stock, as it was an option, however it is rare to find as a stock item.

rear ends, etc.

Hey guys,

Just logged on and saw your discussion on this LS stuff. Cool....!! I happen to have a complete rear end out of a 69 1600 and might send off the 3rd member for a LS from these guys. It's the 3.9 rear end ratio. Wish I had a 3.7. That would compliment my Stroker project.

I have a 510 4 dr. daily driver that has the 3.90 rear end and I've upgraded to a dogleg 5 speed out of a 79 200sx. With 175/70R/13's it makes 3300 rpm at 75.

It's been long ago, but it seems to me that my 2000's turned less than that in 5th at 80 mph.

What an exciting find......thanks!

I sent these guys an email several days ago inquiring about the conversion for the roadster. Still no word as yet.

Hard to get a hold of a phantom?

It took about a week for them to respond to me, here is what they sent me:

We have made fitment on the pl 510 datsun, part #905-gold, and believe
the two may be the same but not 100% sure because we have not made in
house fitment on the r190 roadster. If you sent us the diff, we could
make fitment, and install it for $299 + shipping. Le us know, thanks
Janice

Maybe we should talk to them about some kind of group rate, it looks like we have a few people interested...>>TR

I do not think the 510 rearend and the Roadster rearend are even a remotely close match-up. Since I have never seen a 510 rear end up close I could be wrong. It would not be the first time. Do they need the entire rearend or just the guts? Where are they located? I suppose it is on the East Coast. Shipping could be pricy-unless we all chipped in a bit for the initial fabrication. It would still end up being cheaper than locating a roadster LSD.
I am in!

Phantom Applications...

Post by TR »

They are in Florida, a whole country away, of course. Shipping probably will be 20 to 30 per unit. I think they only need the differential guts. On their site they show one installed, looks like the only clearance issues are within the unit, not the housing, etc.

As for the 510 and 240 units they have, I know the 510 is IRS so the housing looks completely different, but I would bet that the internals are very similar. All differential guts are very similar for that matter.

We could do one and try it, then get more if it is any good...OR we could send them a bunch and ask for a discount taking the risk that the testimonials are bogus...I think the product is worthwhile, though. Everything I have found on the web is positive, no complaints...
