So while I was planning my gas tank restoration. I was wondering how I could keep my tank cleansing product in the tank. It was easy to duct tape off the fill hole and the 3 fuel lines. The fuel sender hole was another issue.
As I was at the hardware store...it hit me. Use a toilet stopper. The one picked fit best. The red ones looked like they would not fit as well. The one I chose was easy to trim to size and worked like a champ. I just fit it in for the cleansings but I duct taped over it when I applied the epoxy coating. I removed it after about 30 minutes of sloshing the epoxy coating around.
Don't be discouraged by the epoxy drip on the outside of the tank. That was actually from when I previously used POR-15 in my trunk and it seeped onto the tank from the cracks in my trunk.

Great Idea. I did POR-15 as well after cleaning the tank with the POR cleaner and a three foot length of chain swing from a tree. Make sure you clean out the fuel lines with some poker while it's still wet or you'll waste a whole day picking chiping those lines back open ;-0

I used bedliner on mine. It protects it from road debris.... is very strong.

I used chain as well. 2ft of large heavy link chain and 2ft of a smaller chain that had small sharper edges. I think that really helped scrape and clean the tank.Fubar wrote:Great Idea. BTW. Getting both of the chains out took some work as there is a baffle in the tank which caught both of the chains. I used a hanger and some diligence to get it out. A variety of large and smaller nuts may be a better solution. If you choose to use nuts, count them before and after to make sure they all com out of the tank.
