New to site-need advice

Post by Chris M »

Hi, my name is Chris and I live in Phoenix. I've been reading through the forum and have gotten a lot of useful info but still need some help making up my mind. At the end of the summer I will be able to purchase a roadster. For a short time I drove a '67 but it was beat and I had to sell for various reasons. I'll be looking for a car I can use as a daily driver, although it won't be my only vehicle. I drive 60-70 mi/day mostly on the freeway. I'll have 8-10k to spend. The main things I'm looking for are reliability, well maintained, no rust, decent paint and interior, and basic upgrades like springs and wheels. I prefer the low windshield cars but have a concern about the steering shaft. What would be involved to modify or convert to the newer column? I would also like something a little faster than a stock R16, so a swap car would be a possibility. I would'nt mind waiting for the right car to pop up, but would like to get some imput from more experienced owners before I start looking. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Check out Ebay. Datsun roadster/datsun 2000/datsun 1600. Also check Items for Sale on this forum. For 8-10 grand you should be able to locate a fine car. This week Culver City(LA suburb) Nissan was selling a 1969 1600 they have had on display in their showroom. They are asking $6900.00. I'm imagining if it was on display, it must be in xlnt condition. Don't freak out about the low windshied steering box. I owned a "66 for 5 years and 90,000 miles without any problems. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. The thing I was concerned about with the steering is the solid steering shaft. Has anyone ever been stabbed with one in an accident, or was that all just safety zealot stuff?

Getting impaled with the steering column is one of a very long list of things you'd have to worry about upon having a collision in one of these little cars.

Nice car. After I move I'll check with you and see if you still have it.

i too was concerned about the solid shaft in a low windshield. after gathering some information, it seems if you hit something hard enough to get speared by the column you would have little chance anyway.

I drive a 67.5 as my only car through san francisco traffic every day - keep your head on a swivel and drive defensively and you'll should fine.
