I just bought a cool wireless camera kit for my autocross car. The camera is about the size of a 9 volt battery and transmitts audio as well. It is powered from 9 volts DC. I purchased a DC/DC converter that allows me to pulg the camera into a cigarette lighter. The receiver is about the size of a deco of playing cards. It runs off of 12 volts DC. It has two antennas. The standard antenna is a whip type that has a range of about 300 feet. It works best with line of sight to the camera. The other antenna is a flat patch type and has a range of 2000 feet (1/3 of a mile). The flat patch antenna is supposed to be directional and only have a 75 degree reception area. I found that the directional antenna can see 360 degrees when the transmitter is fairly close. As the transmitter gets farther away the antenna must be pointed at it.
I think this setup will work well for the autocross car. Rarely does the course take the car more than 2000 feet away from my pit area. Rarely does the event site have enough elevation change that line of site can't be established. I plan on mounting the receiver on a 16 foot pole for less interference from ground clutter.
I had problems with mounting a video camera in the car. There was too much vibration and rough ride for the recording heads. The video would cut out and be poor quality. By removing the recorder out of the car I will eliminate all of that. The light weight of the wireless camera will also help steady the picture.
An added bonus is that spectators can watch in real time while I'm on course. I can watch my dad while he is on course. We can give each other criticism or get criticism from spectators which will help us go faster.
Now I need to get someone to host my videos so that I can share them with all of you. Any takers?
Thanks,
Wireless

There was a short film made in the 60's. A guy strapped a movie camera to his front bumper and drove like a maniac through Paris city traffic. It's great, camera about 1 foot off the ground.
You could put the camera on your helmet chin bar for a good view, your head will be the vibration dampner.
