Help With Solex Carbs

Post by Luke D »

I have only weber experience. I recently acquired two pair of Solex carbs with intakes. Have observed online discussions about new and old style Solex carbs for the the U20 Roadsters. How do you tell them apart? Both pair have IDs reading N44PHH – A11 MIKNI KOGYO. But, the top sides of each pair differ in appearance. Any help would be appreciated.

The easiest way to tell is the jet cover. If there are two screws holding the jet cover on, then they are early carbs. If there is only one screw or a wing stud holding the jet cover on, then they are a later set.

Here is a picture of one carb from each pair. Same part number. Different visual appearance.

Two different sets of late style carbs. The late carb tops were made to allow the floats to be hung from either the left or the right depending on how they are machined. You happen to have one of each set there!

The difference that you are seeing is that one set has the adjustable float while the other does not have that feature. The adjustable float version is the one that has the crescent shaped metal bracket with the nut/screw in the top of it.

In looking at your other pics, there appears to be a 1600 solex setup with the early type carbs. That is the set with the heat shield on it that is behind the cylinder heads. I'd love to own that setup. You also scored a non-smog head. Shifty is right, you DID hit the mother lode!!
