Rear Diff Swap Questions
I drive a 2000 that currently has a 5:13 in it, great up to about 100 MPH but then it's all done. Plus I want to get away from 5-4 down shifts. Anyway, my friend Jake has a 3:90 out of a 1600 he is willing to part with. The question is.....will the 1600 center section slip into the 2000 rear end without having to reinvent the wheel. Thanks....Steve

The 1600 3rd member will fit the housing. Hopefully the axles have stock splines. It would be good to get a new gasket and possibly some new axle seals that fit in the housing.

Okay, Okay...so you guys are saying a 3:90 differental from a 1600 will bolt into a 2000 axle carrier, the axles will just slide in, the drive shaft will bolt up and we are good to go. No shims, no fabrication, no messing around? If everything works out I intend to put everything new in the unit while it's apart.

I seem to recall a difference between the grouping of 3.7, 3.9, and 4.11 and the grouping of 4.37, 4.62, and 5.13. It was a listing in the old comp catalog, but for the life of me cannot remember what the difference is. can anyone help?

As far as I know, the only difference is that the tall rear ends (3.7,3.9,4.11,4.38) all used the aluminum carrier, and the short and really short ones used the cast iron carriers. I think all the carriers however will fit into the same housing as is. As far as the carriers are concerned, I think the only difference in them is on the early ones (65-67) that didn't have the torque rod on them. Everything else is the same.

I found the comp catalog with the detailss:
under the listing of H190 ring and pinion sets:
The "early" style ring gear has an outer OD of 190mm (H190), an ID of 120mm, and uses a 3/8" ring gear bolt (38102-01300) and is designed to work in the 1600/2000 H190 third member with an aluminum housing. To install a 4.375, 4.625, or 5.125 gear set into a diff equipped with a 3.7, 3.889 or 4.111 gears,a 4mm/.158 ring gear spacer is required. Due to a smaller diameter pinion shaft the 4.875 and the 5.874 gear sets are interchangeable, but cannot be installed into differentials with other ratios.
this is directly out of the Nissan motorsport catalog 1998-1999.

my 1976 comp catalog has part numbers for the limited slips in aluminum and cast iron housings:

Okay class, I need a clear answer....can we remove the 5:13 center section from my 2000 and replace it with a 3:90 diff from a 1600.

Yes. You can do it in about an hour - disconnect the driveshaft (noting orientation) pull the axles, swap the diff units, and reassemble. I would pick up a gasket or at least some RTV first.

Kinda wonder if it might be a lot easier (assuming you have it and it's good) to swap out the whole rear end, swap over the brakes if they are bad, etc than to pull the axles, deal with new seals/etc. Just a thought...

That would work but only the center section is available so I have to do it this way.
