Datsun repro VIN plates.

Post by Nissanman »

Currently I have my SP310 instruments in for re-furbishing.
http://www.gaugeworks.com.au/services.html
The guy that is doing them actually outsources the gauges if they require repainting etc.
http://www.engravingservices.com.au/
Anyhoo, I visited the relevant shop after I dropped off the gauges and I noticed that they do a plethora of signs and labels, in particular, aluminium machine spec. plates.
For example: -
Image
So, the idea occurred to me to get a repro. of the VIN plate for my car to look nice and fresh under the hood.
My original is reasonably presentable but a fresh one would be far nicer.
VIN plate.jpg
I haven't discussed this plan with them yet but would anyone be interested in a new reproduction VIN plate for the SP310?
The year digit, engine number and car number data would be left blank for you to stamp.
If I can get a job lot done for the price of one and there is a demand, I just might do it

They're $30 from Dean.
Would these be different in some way?

I think that Carl Jaeger (New-Datsun-Parts) had some SP plates, but I cannot swear to it.

I got mine a few years ago from Carl. It is good quality.
Thanks to Sid for the lead back then.

First the GOOD news.
The Engraver can replicate both the VIN plate and the Alternator Data plate for the '65 and earlier SP[L]310.
Now the BAD news.
The $$ for a minimum quantity of 24 of each broke the bank :smt009 .
So I am ordering only ONE of each plate, blank for the use of.
However, there is a Plan B.
I could get the metal plates replicated as a vinyl decal so folks could place them over their original plates.
Not the same I know, but when I got the VR and Alternator Warning decals done they came out great.
There is a very good chance the decal company can make them as good in appearance as a metal plate 8)
And I KNOW they will be a lot cheaper :)
Anyhoo, that is where I'm at ATM.
I am a little disappointed but I just couldn't justify spending the money knowing that I would never get it all back :smt010

I had that idea too. Well not quite. I thought you could scan a plate to size then just print it onto a clear vinyl sheet or even a clear large mailing label then just stick it on a clean metal plate or the other side of your old one. When it starts to deteriorate you just print another one.

Sadly-Linda has passed away 2022. She was the 311's den mother and drove the first Rare-Parts ball joint project. RIP.

I know, old thread...but Linda you have a good point? In addition if you (anyone) decided to go this route. I would also hit it with some automotive clear, this would help is last longer against the elements; dirt, grease, temperature, etc?

I'm still going to get my plates scanned and printed.
Remains to be seen what material they can do it on to make them look reasonable.
I haven't had any complaints about the Voltage Regulator and Caution lables that I have been selling and they are both adjacent the engine.
Going into the city tomorrow so I will call in to the Printer that did the lables and have a chat with him.

OK got them done.
ATM I have one A4 self adhesive vinyl sheet of each decal: -

Positive ground alternator plate.

The decal is not as shiny as the original metal plate but I reckon they look quite passable as an alternative to a replica plate.
Peel and stick over your original plates, job done :)

Linda suggested I show some pics. of the decal in use.
Here is an original uncleaned Alternator Plate
Image

I scrubbed the plate with thinners and this is the best it came up.

Cleaned plate compared with a reproduction decal.

Plate re-installed on the alternator.

Looks the goods and inexpensive as well 8) 8)
