Abandoned 1600?

Post by JoeK »

A friend of mine just called and told me he saw a 1600 on the decomissioned Alameda Naval Base. A couple of flat tires, red car and a black hard top. He said it looked pretty complete, though he's not a roadster guy. He first noticed it 2 days ago, and it got red tagged last night.

He said it was very close to Alameda Point Storage, on West Oriskany. I'm planning on going to check it out after work, I'll update the list then, unless somebody else wants to go check it out sooner.

If anybody knows who this car belongs to, and doesn't want it stripped or otherwise removed, speak up soon.

In case anybody is interested, I went to check this car out. It's a '69 1600, Red, with a black hardtop and Chrome plated steel wheels. The car looks to be almost 100% complete, though I didn't pop the hood, it still has an oilpan. Most of the body is in great shape, though the clearcoat is peeling. Even the interior is in pretty nice condition, though dirty and the ignition is torn out. It looks like this car may have been pushed out of the storage yard and abandoned. It's right next to an auto storage lot.

I feel torn about this. I'm pretty sure this car is abandoned, but there really is no way to tell. I may call the storage place tomorrow and see if they anything about it. Even so, I have no place to take the car if I decided to. But in the next few days, this car would go to the wrecker, probably to have the steel resurected into a KIA.

If anybody does decide to grab it, can I have the bumpers and overiders? They are in excellent shape, and mine basically suck.

Joe, did you get the VIN and check it against the registry?

Did you leave a note on it?

Did you ask the storage lot if they pushed it out there because someone didn't pay for the storage?

Joe,

I will take the car if you find it is available. I will give it a good home in the wine country.

Thanks

I will call Alameda Point Storage tomorrow and ask them about it. I did not think to get the VIN, but I got the license ZOZ 774. The notice on the car says it has to be moved by 5/19 at 5:30. If I had a place to take it, I would.

One option, ofcourse, would be to store it in Alameda Point Storage. I think they charge $40 a month. If they pushed it out because somebody hadn't paid their bill, maybe they will pull it back in :)

Okay, here's the deal. I talked to the storage place and they aren't linked to it at all. They told me the car had been being pushed around the area for the last few weeks. Whenit threatened to rain, a hardtop found it's way on top of it. So somebody is taking some steps to preserve the car. But she said that other people have asked about the car, that a few people have left notes on the car, and that there even used to be a phone number on the car. No one has gotten any type of response so far.

If anybody is interested, this is what I suggest they do. Call the Alameda police dept, find who does the city towing, and call them. If they tow the car, they will auction it off 6 weeks later, unless the original owner pays all the fees and retrieves the car. Some tow yards will put you on a list and inform you of an upcoming auction. I would do all this myself, but I'll be leaving the country in 3 weeks, and will gone for 6 weeks. Plus, if I bring home another money pit, I think the old lady would throttle me. I have some pics of the car and will forward them to anybody who wants to see if this might even be worth their time.

And if anybody decides to just go take it, I don't want to know about. But you can send me the rear bumper and overiders

Good luck to any who may decide to go for it.

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thats my first original roadster!! I bought it from a woman who lived in Oakland at the time. I was 21 and owned it for the next couple of years before I went away to college. I sold it to a guy who was going to use it to commute to college in. Whats the private Catholic college in the EastBay??
Dang I have to go over and see it....poor thing its making me weepy to think about it....

Abandoned 1600?

Whoever gets it will have to jump through some hoops at the DMV and get it signed off by any and all previous owners on record. I went through this when I bought a '65 T-bird a while back and couldn't get a hold of the registered owner. I had to document my correspondence. This can potentially be a big hassle, and the owner can just reclaim it since you don't have a pinkslip or bill of sale. You are saving it from the wrecking yard though, so good for you. If it's anywhere near running, and not yet claimed, I'll take it. 415-647-2509. I'm in San Francisco
