Strange SU's
I have a few questions about a pair of 2L SU's - I'd appreciate your help.
The carbs came with a donor engine, block numbers indicate it is from a '69 SRL. The carbs have 1600-style floats and valves unlike the other carb set I have (also from a '69).
At first I thought someone had put 1600 float bowls on, but they are mirror image (unlike the carbs on my 67 R-16). Ever seen that? They appear to to fit properly to the carb body. They also have the thermal/overflow valve.
The needles seem odd - more blunt is the best way I can describe them - with a more rounded taper.
The throttle shafts on this pair seem really good, do I just use 1600 floats, etc. and go with these carbs?

Leigh,
Towards the end of the production run, Nissan started using the 1600 type floats and tops on the 2000s. I believe that the carbs that you have are 1970 model carbs. The blunted needles are likely a smog needle - Keith could tell you more about those.
The 1600 type float chambers should be fine...

Thanks Sid! Keith confirmed that the 2000's came with both styles of floats and bowls.
The big question is to rebuild this set - needles, nozzles, floats, etc. or frankenstein the two sets together, if possible.
Or do I forget all this SU business and break out the late-style set of Solexes I've been saving in box for SRL-00139?

Quick question: how do you guys clean-up your carbs (the metal carb bodies) so well? Mine are all grungy like a "before picture" and I'm wondering how you get them nice and pretty like in the "after" pictures I've seen. Is it just elbow grease or what?
Leigh--on your webpage you have exactly the kind of before and after pics I'm talking about.

I just use carb cleaner and a toothbrush to start. Then I use some aluminum polish that comes in a can with wadding, then some liquid metal polish.
Lots of elbow grease!

It's right next to the muffler bearings.
Any concerns running an "A" cam with Solexes?

A rare pic of the elusive muffler bearing. Actually, Volvo diid have a part listed as a muffler bearing, but I think this was the result of a poor Swedish to English translation:

Enjoy.

If you want to rebuild carbs, I would rebuild the ones off the car. No reason to swap stuff around and get all confused about what you have. Get some good needles from Keith.
Regarding the Solex/A cam combo, I have talked to several folks and got nothing but good reports. Apparently, the A cam keeps the bottom end you have, while the Solex carbs gives you a bit more at the top (which makes sense to me). So either setup should be good to go!
