Turn Signal Lever Knob -66

Post by SABLT194 »

I need to rechrome my turnsignal lever. The friggen knob sure doesn't just thread right off. Does anyone know for sure: Is it threaded on or glued on? Any tricks to getting the knob off? A lil heat maybe.

Steve

It is glued on I think. Be careful you don't break it trying to take it off. You could just mask it off and refurb the shaft.

You have to disassemble the turn signal switch to remove the lever. There are some screws and pins and they are not easy to remove. Not fun. I would seriously see if your chromer can do it still attached to the switch.

Are you sure you want to chrome it? I think it was originally an aluminum color. There are some very good high gloss paints available as well. I've seen chrome paint before. There are differing qualities and prices. Here is one you can get at Walmart.

The early (pre 67.5) ones are chrome. 67.5 and later are satin silver.

Wooo Hooo - I got it off - The knob is threaded on with adhesive on the threads. Here's how if anyone else has a need to know.

1) clamp the steel lever part in a smooth jaw vice nice and tight
2) warm the steel lever with a propane torch and allow the heat to travel up into the threaded connection
3) wrap a couple of layers of paper towel aroung the knob and start working it with a good pair of pliers- need lots of paper towel layers to keep plier marks off the knob.
4) add more heat as necessary until you get the threads/adhesive to crack loose

Then you're home free

Steve,

Seeing that you removed your knob, I decided to give it a try on one I have but mine popped right off (figures, right?). The one I have has a groove machined into the arm and an internal "c" clip in the knob rather than the threads you mention.
