Head Not Getting Oil

Post by Charles K »

U20 engine rebuilt several years ago, but, never run.
Started-up fine and has good oil pressure up to the cylinder head.
Mechanic who is helping me is not very familiar with car's oiling system and has some questions.
#1 Is the Aux. shaft's rear journal grooved?
#2 Is hole from top of block to aux. shaft straight?

Not sure if auxilliary shaft is getting oil.
Any idea what the problem might be?

Hello, Hate to say it but it sounds like you may have the rear Jack Cam bushing in backwards or not lined up with the oil galleries, this is a common mistake by mechanics that are not familiar with the u20.
There is an input hole and a drain hole at the bottom of the cam journal and about 11:00 oclock there is a gallery going upward thru the block toward the head. The oil has to go through the rear Jack cam bushing to get to the head so if the holes are not lined up you have great pressure on your gauge but no oil to the head.
If this is the problem you'll need to pull engine and remove cam and relocate rear bushing to line up with the galleries in that journal... Bill

Thanks, Bill, for the prompt and informative reply.
The mechanic who rebuilt the engine (and, who is now looking it over with me) is a very capable guy who does good work; but, if you are saying that even experts can overlook this detail, then, there's a good chance that this bushing is the problem.
