67 1/2 SRL vinplates

Hello everyone, I was looking at the beautiful silver 67 1/2 2000 on ebay, I'm probably don't know what I'm talking about, I have seen SRL vinplates sold for early models with an extra line for the date, does this car have the original plate or is it a reproduction vin plate. There is no date line on it. Please correct me if I'm wrong...Bill

You are not out to lunch. I partnered with Tim Waltz to have the early ID plates made up as they had not been reproduced before. The early 67.5 cars had the model for year line. Somewhere along the line in the production run, Nissan changed to the more common version without the model for year line. I have been told that it was somewhere after the first 200 were made, but have not seen enough early ID tags to find a cutoff date.

The plate on the auction car appears to be the original.

I forgot to add something. The 1600s followed the same pattern. Pre 67.5, all had the model for year line. Post 67.5 all were without the model for year line. 67.5 cars could be either.

I am only talking about US production cars here.

All that having been said, the tags with the model for year lines can be used on any year except the 1970. Even if they are not cosmetically correct, the repro ID tags are a nice finishing touch on a car that has been either freshened up, repainted, or restored. A nasty tag kills the effect.

I have yet to figure out why some aged well and some didn't. I have seen nice cars that don't appear to have been reworked with tags that have faded out. Car #76 was HIDEOUS when I got it, but the tag was almost mint. Weird...

Sid thanks for the info on the vinplates, I knew I seen the dated ones somewhere, but did not no anything about the year changes or which models were effected.

I agree on the quality of vin plates, my 68 spl is nice and presentable for a daily driver, the 69 srl looks like a blank piece of tin with numbers stamped in it. My 70 srl looks like it was printed yesterday. I actually found it in a baggie sitting in the glove box, when I bought the car the owner said the car never had the vin plate since he owned it. My guess is he never got around to opening the glove box.. Bill

Well, one of mine would make the 69 more presentable!!

That 70 sounds like more of a deal every day. Swap the engines between your two mismatched cars and you will have a neat set!

Thats really funny. My 69 plate is blank aside from the stamping of the vin #s, however the one off my early 68 parts car was in good shape. Thats the one I have on the car now. At solvang, I noticed that the 69s seemed to fade out, there were 2 unrestored cars whos plates looked just like mine, blank.

Sounds like 69 was a bad vin plate year.. Sid, You are right on track..The R that came with the 70srl will go into the 68 spl and the u20, which is the matching # for my 69srl project, is going into the 70, it's like musical motors, not done yet, Then I have a u20 from a different 70srl that I'm finally rebuilding and when done it will be the 70srl's engine, which means my running u20 will end up back in the matching # 69srl, plus I still have the dissambled R that is the original #engine for my 68spl. I need more room

Since you think that you are old, I will let you in on a little secret. Everyone will tell you that the secret of age is that you are only as old as you feel. Well, that is only half the secret. If the first part is true, then the rest of it is that you need to keep feeling younger women!!

I used to watch Nick at Night and other old reruns. When I was a teen, I thought that Leave It To Beaver was pretty cool and did not understand why it had been discontinued SOOO many years ago. I always dug the old shows. Gilligan's Island, I Dream Of Genie, The Munsters (the Munster Koach and Drag-U-La were both built on Cobras - who couldn't love that!), the Addams Family, and so forth. Those campy shows were classic TV. Not the contemporary drivel that was on when I was a kid, and certainly not now...

, they're still great to watch. Plus Abbott and Costello started hanging with Wolfman and Frankenstien.... Man did we get off topic ..Oh, yes those are nice vin plates you guys made.... Bill

Hi Howard, sounds like you guy's had a great weekend at Solvang.. I guess the car will go above 17-18K, as for the bidder with negative feedback that could be a different story... can't wait to watch the end of this auction. I bet I'm not the only one who'll just be watching... Bill

Bill, the 67.5 went for $15099. I wonder where the buyer lives? Maybe he will be at Solvang next year.
Yea, Solvang was a blast. The Fresno people put on a great show. Very well organized and nice people. Some of the cars were mindblowing. Alvin's, and Paul Gabriel's were incredible examples of what can be done with imagination and some moola! I even won an award (beginners luck).

Hi Howard, beginers luck... that's great to here...look out next year... Darn, I'm missing out on all the fun... I'm hoping to make it to Shasta this year, car or no car I may just drive down and be a spectator.
Did you notice that the reserve was not met on the 67 1/2. I wonder if it will be reposted or they may have a reserve set very high just to see what it is worth....No matter what price, that is one nice roadster.. I wish it was sitting in my garage... Have a great day... Bill
