Fantastic! A couple of things to add/suggest here. The tank has a drain bolt (just like the oil pan) that you use an allen wrench to unscrew. It is TIGHT, but does come out.
There is no need to disconnect the vent line in the trunk. It goes from the filler neck to a fitting that is mounted to the trunk floor. With the inspection hatch opened, or the tank dropped, the line can be removed there. I would suggest just cutting it and replacing it as it can be a huge PITA to remove - they seem to fuse to the fittings...
If you still have the tank out, can you take one more picture? Remove the hooks from the straps and hang them in the holes in the trunk floor mounted supports. Then snap a picture looking at them back towards the frame. That will show where to drill the holes in the frame for the tank mounting revision that was suggested.
Steve,
This (reformatted a bit with another picture or two added showing the above stuff) would be a great tech tip article!

RE:Gas Tank Article
I will let you guys finish up with a few more pictures and then if it is okay I will grab everything, tweak on it a bit, and then post it on the main site. Great stuff.

I'll take those pics and post them later today. Currently the tank is filled with soapy water for its initial cleaning. My drain plug was actually a bolt that I used a 19mm socket to remove--I used it to drain the small amount of remaining gas after I pulled the tank. Not sure if an allen wrench would work as well, but I'll double check. It is very possible that mine is not the original plug. In any case, I'll get a pic of the drain plug and one of the j-bolts.

fuel tank sender
Hi all,
While on the subject of fuel tanks, is there any way to tell from the outside what model year sender unit will be in the tank, and does it matter if you replace one with the other? I note that the vendors all have 2 listed but I want to know which one I need before I drop the tank etc.
Thanks
Stuart

There were at least 3 senders. One was for the 1500 = most vendors don't list it anymore. The others are for the 1600s/2000s. The early version (used through 67.5) is held in by 5 or 6 machine screws. The later version (68 and later) is held in by metal retaining ring rather than the screws. The ones that Conner posted pictures of is the latter version. So yes, it does matter which you order! Check your car to be sure as tanks can be switched around.

Stuart,
Yup! You can tell by opening the inspection hatch in the trunk.
This is the sending unit for the pre 68 cars:

This is the sending unit for the 68 and later cars:

Should be super easy to tell!
BTW, what happened to the 1500??

Joaquin,
That is cool. I may need it one day so don't ditch it!
I was referring to a car that Stuart was talking about buying (think I have the right Stuart here. If no, he probably thinks I am nuts!

Your not nuts!
Hey Sid,
Your not nuts, you have the right Stuart... I didn't buy it. Something about the significant other wanting me to buy another "normal" (her words not mine) car first
I wasn't allowed to have 2 Roadsters!
But... in the meantime I can still work on my 66 (or 67 or 68 whichever it is), hence the question about the fuel tank.
My current roadster's year is a bit uncertain, I think its a 66 (by chassis number) but the rego says 68 and there appears to be a mis-match of little things that make it hard to tell... hence the question about the fuel tank.
Stuart
PS. I still have the contact details for the guy in Japan who had the 64... don't think he has it anymore though.
