New Owner in Australia

Post by rp975 »

Well hello, I guess I should introduce myself, I am Robert Paul, from Charlestown, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

I am the winner of Vic's roadster. I have attached part of an email that I have sent to Victor and Ron.

Hello Vic and Ron,

WOW!!! I can hardly believe it.....It is Monday and a holiday here, I was down in the garage working on my project car, a 1974 260z, when I thought wait hang, on it is yesterday US time and the Vic’s Roadster may have been drawn.

So I got cleaned up and went upstairs to check on my emails, as I waited for my computer to start up I thought to myself, now there may be an email, but it will probably just be telling me that I didn’t win, so just look anyway.

Well sure enough there was an email so I opened it and read it, well then I had to read it again because .....It said that I had won..well I was just amazed, I ran downstairs and yelled “I won a car”.

My family were thinking sure what is it a matchbox car or what.

Firstly I would like to thank Victor for putting his car up, that would be very difficult to do. I am glad that a lot of people have supported you in purchasing tickets in this.I know that you are a great guy who has always been very supportive in helping fellow Datsun enthusiasts. I have seen your posts on quite a few Datsun forums over the years. I am honoured to be able to own such a special and well known car. I promise to send back photos of its future journeys on not only the other side of the world but also on the other side of the road.

Just to give you some background on who I am, I was born in 1960 so a similar age to you Victor, I have had 6 zed cars and a couple of 510’s, I did some club motorsport in the 80’s so I guess you could call me an enthusiast.

I am on a few forums mainly watching but you can see my project here http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php/top" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... into-260z/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and here http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/sear" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... hid=952622" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Also I am on this forum VQ30det which is on the type of engine I am putting into my Z, here is a link to a thread on how I am fabricating my custom inlet manifold.http://www.vq30det.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1886

Secondly I would like to thank Ron for organising this event, even down to the video on youtube, which I have watched quite a few times. It shows how caring a guy you are Ron, such attention to detail.

I have not imported a car from the US before, I will look into how this needs to happen and appreciate your help in holding the car for me for a few weeks Ron.

Hi Rob, congrats on your prize. Might see you on a run sometime. There are several roadster owners in Newcastle. We have some runs up your way later this year. If you are interested here are the details: http://www.datsun.org.au/calendar.html

I have heard that you can only drive the car to club events with that kind of rego?

Is this correct?

There are restrictions such as club events or "servicing/testing drives" or where club approves an application to drive the car somewhere. I read that the Australian national street machine federation is lobbying to change this as it is too restrictive, They are looking at a 90 day log book system. Here are the rtas rules http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/ ... policy.pdf

I respect traffic laws as much as anyone and I certainly don't claim that our laws are better but what is the reason for that law?
Isn't it all up to driver skill? It seems it is more dangerous to allow tourists like me to drive at all than to restrict someone who would be familiar with the differences in his own car.
I would think the more you drive it, the more skill you build and the safer you would be.

Normal car yearly registration costs about $700. About $200 to dept of roads and $500 goes to compulsory personal health insurance if you have an accident. The restricted club rego is about $60/year inclusive of insurance because generally the club or historic car is driven much less as it is not a daily driver. You can register with full registration if you want. To top it off it is different in each state with some states allowing less restriction.

I heard that in New Soith Wales the reason we have the big restriction is a Limo company was using car H plated historic rego car as if they were Hire cars. Someone always ruins it for everyone else.

Now I understand and that makes sense. I thought it was the right hand left hand thing.

Matt,

I your car on club rego?

I spoke with a roadster owner in Victoria and they have the 90 day system which sounds great to me, I hope they introduce it soon in NSW.
