Cost effective molding clips

Post by fishyroadster »

I wanted to share what i came up with to hold the molding on my 68. I would love to have the real deal but i have a hard time paying 100 bucks for a set. I can find another roadster part to spend a 100 bucks on lol. Let me know what you think. I am open to advice and improvements.

First i have a couple clips that are in good order. I used them as my template. I went to HD to see what i could find. I found these clips in the special fastener section. They are 1 per package and about .45. they are bent so you can straighten the clip with a screwdriver and them snap them in two. So know the one clip is two. Whoohoo. Saving money already. I then found the right screw size which came with the nuts and then found stainless lock washers and regular washers. Total cost is about 15 bucks.

Know to make them fit. To use the second part of the clip you have to mash it a bit. I simply stuck it in my vice and tightened and bam its now flat. Next we need to get rid of those pesky edges that taking it apart leaves. I pulled out the trusty dremmel and just filed it away. Test fit you clips here and there as you may need to run down the edges quickly just to file off for that smooth fit. Once again this is just a good low cost alternative. With a little work they should be a great substitute.

Once you are done with the clip simply file off the head of the screw a bit. The head is to large to fit behind the clip so you need to make it a lower profile. Once again trusty dremmel.

I tested holding the screw with jb weld. It looks like it will work fine. I will let you know if i find a better alternative. Below i have picks posted that show the part numbers and my product vs original and fitment in my molding. Hope this helps someone else on a budget.

This is picture of the parts and the original vs mine (i could file off the edges to get the corners down but its not necessary)

Close up of the clip part bag. I wanted stainless but they didn't have them. I may strip these and plate them.

And lastly my clip on the left and the old on the right. The pic is at a funny angle but everything lines up perfect and is the same size. The nice thing with this is if you need a longer stud you just get a diff length bolt.
