Re: Switchback LED Bulbs

Post by tjp »

[quote="bikermike"]I am trying out out some new LED bulbs in the front turn signal / parking light buckets....I found "switchback" LEDs on ebay and figured I'd give them a shot.

Are these a straight "drop in" replacement for the stock bulb? Plug and play for lack of a better term...

Thanks

Yes, except that you may need a new Heavy Duty flasher unit or "LED Friendly" unit to work properly.

Yes, it's a drop in fit with an 1157 compatible bulb.

I noticed something odd tonight...when I have the parking lights on and hit the brakes the white LEDs flash and then stabilize. When I remove the the brake/tail bulbs, no flickering. When I have rear bulb in, still ok. two bulbs is the tipping point. I tried different bulbs from my other car, same thing. I cleaned up the rear ground wire (the others were done a few weeks back, as well as the fuse box terminals). I suspect the LEDs are sensitive to a sudden change in the system. The same thing happens when I flip on the fog lights which are on an independent circuit. It doesn't happen all the time.

Currently in the rear I have regular 1157 incandescent bulbs. I have some reds on order. Maybe with LEDs on all corners the behavior will be better since the LED brake lighs won't draw as much power. Maybe there is just something screwy with my wiring and the LEDs are more sensitive.

FYI - I put the old flasher can back in and the bulbs worked with them. I don't know if when both fronts and rears will be LEDs if that will be the case.

I installed LEDs for the rear tail / brake lights and the flickering up front when braking has been resolved.

I'll take some pics and video over the weekend and post. I haven't done the rear turn signals yet.

I got the LED's for the front, and they were "plug and play", the standard flasher worked fine. I LOVE these, I think they add a lot of visibility to our small rides!
thanks for the info - time to get the backs now to.

The listing for these bulbs has ended adn I don't see the same item listed.

Can someone tell me if any of these will work (they look different) but came up with a search of the same text as the other bulbs: http://tinyurl.com/7kt4x7p" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks!

The first two look correct, but they are much more expensive than what I paid. I'd go to the original link, and then go to the sellers store.

I used the more conventional 1157 led replacements. I had to replace the blinker with a small electronic circuit because the original blinker does not work with the more efficient led lamps. Sure, you can add resistors or "dummy" loads to trick the blinker but I didn't want to. When I originally read this thread I got an idea. The normal way the blinkers work is the running lights are on and the blinkers make the bulb brighter. What I did and this is only on the rear lights, I disconnected the running lights and added a 10 volt regulator between the running light circuit and the brake lights. When the turn signal is activated, the bulb blinks on and off from whichever state they are in, off or dim running or bright brake. It is a lot more noticeable. This along with my BRIGHT third light on the roll bar should help keep bumpers out of my trunk!
