cool, thanks again for more bits of history. Inspired me to install it right away. I kind of like the raw look -- matches the rest of the car.

Before you powdercoat the bar, do that harness cross bar that Alvin now has on his car... Much better alignment for harnesses than mounting them on the package shelf. And a great place for the GoPro too I bet!

^ Definitely a good idea. Will depend a great deal on what seats I use. The stock seat doesn't have openings for harnesses, so I would have to take a good look at that. The last thing you want is harness straps slipping off the sides of the seat in an accident.

You are a brave man to hit that aluminum housing that hard - be careful, just as you get it loose, it'll crack

PB blaster would work better though still tough for it to get down the studs. I'd use a rubber mallet, those therm towers are hard to find.
I've had plenty of trouble with the tower too. Maybe try a thin chisel under the base being careful not to gouge. Trying to back the studs out could cause them to snap.

All off now, no breakage. Turns out I need an extra gasket (Dean provided two only) because I have the engine bracket there. So I need two on the bottom.

I'll make one or does someone know of a match?

Meanwhile... brakes... more problems ahead. Going to be a long day. This is fun, right?

Glad you got it off, especially in one piece!
As far as the gasket, I made one myself, it's pretty easy, just get some gasket material to match what you have, and use one of the new ones as a template.

The brakes are actually really easy to rebuild if you have a good MC and the wheel cylinders and pistons aren't pitted. Once all the pieces are off the car you can rebuild them on the bench in about 2 hrs. Getting the pistons apart w/ air is a lot of fun too.

Now bleeding them once you have everything back together is a diff story...

Yeah that's the thing. Going to be Monday to get rebuild parts, methinks.

It's ok, the beast Yaris needs some fresh air anyway.

The rebuild kits are still available from Nissan (fronts) and Napa (rears).

As for getting the pistons unstuck, if they won't come out w/ air, I sort of "rocked" the male part of each piston back and forth by hitting it w/ a hammer. It loosens up really easily w/o damaging it and then it usually pops out w/ air.

On getting the pistons out, if air doesn't work the first time, put the caliper in a vise and evenly press the piston back in till it just seats -not too hard. Then apply air, then vise in, then air, then vise in, then air....
It will eventually pop-out this way.
And no offense James, but I like the control, and eveness of a vise over a hammer!

Need rear cylinders and shoes. Cylinders mostly.
