Is there supposed to be any specific setting for the oil feed screw for the rocker shaft, or is it just supposed to be kind of loose to allow oil to circulate?

On the 1600 the screw is located closest to the firewall.

I believe you are talking about the screw that is there to keep the rockershaft from turning in the rockershaft stand. Oil feeds to it from underneath, so the screw should just be snugged down and the metal keeper put on top to keep it from loosening.

Does anyone have more details on the 'metal keeper' that is described in this previous posting? What does it look like and what does it attach to?
I recently removed the valve cover on my '68 1600 for the first time (still prepping to test the engine for the first time). I was surprised to find the set screw laying loose on the post. It appeared to have some damage to the top of the screw. I was unsure if that was intentional. Anybody have experience with these?

Mine looks like yours only not as clean. Just a set screw chewed up at the top by bad screwdriver work.

I just took an old rocker shaft I had. Took that screw out and all it does...(important) keeps the shaft from turning. So the oil holes are kept at top and bottom to oil the rockers. it needs to be tight through its hole in the shaft. I have one if you cant find one. Or you could go to ACE or some where and get a screw and taper the end like that one is to fit the hole. In my pic the hole next to tower is the larger hole for the set screw. The smaller ones are the oil feeds.

Any chance they were staked in place, might explain the chewed up slot? Great place for blue Loctite.

Mine didnt look staked but the lock tight maybe a good ID Dave. guess now I better check the one on my 1600 engine. i changed the rocker shaft a few months ago. Used a Metric and SAE rocker shaft Assembly to make one good one. I think the difference was the towers were different...but Ive slept since then.

Thanks for all of the input and feedback. You just have to love this forum. I will use some loctite to make sure that it stays in place in the future.
I only purchased this car this past summer so I don't know the history of the car. Given that the valve area is so clean, I am guessing that someone has done some engine work on this one. There were some hoses and lines out of place so they didn't get it completely right. Hopefully this is the only 'screw loose' in this engine.

It's always good idea to check if this screw is nice and snug.
Checked mine last night: it was completely unscrewed, just wobbling in there. I had totally overlooked it when I did the valve adjustment 2 weeks ago.
Cleaned it, added some blue Loctite as suggested and tightened it nicely.
