4 post roadster body hoist

Post by Datrock »

Hello, I am wanting to build a body hoist /storage place to put my body above my frame while I do my work to the frame. I am limited to a single car garage to do my work. A few years ago I seen photo's of a nice unit made out of 2x6's and looked just like I want to build. It looked like the body could me raised enough to wheel the frame in and out of the area.
I am open to any sugestions or if some one has this design or a link to the design I would be very grateful and then I could start building my body hoist.
Oh, yes the car in mind is bare body, 69 srl31109209 and has the matching #09774 rebuilt u20. It came from California via Idaho???in the late 90's. I have allot of parts stored in it so I would consider it being the full body weight or if I have to the parts can be removede to lighten the weight. I put the car info on here just to see if anyone might recognize the #'s. Thanks... Bill

I don't have blueprints made of the four post cage I built, but here is a link to a picture:

http://www.olympus.ofoto.com/PhotoView. ... 7977338062

I used 2 2x4s to sandwiched around the rafters in the top of my garage, and then screwed them into a 2x4 that I Tapconed into the floor. I then drilled holes at various heights with a 3/4" spade to allow the use of Grade 8 3/4" bolts for positioning. A small square of 2x4 was cut to go around the bolt to spread the weight across a wider surface area. For the cross piece you can use a 2x10 with notches cut to accomadate the 2x4s that surround your bolt. A 2x10 can then be ran across the rafters that you have now supported at the corners with your 2x4s. This 2x10 can be used as your cross support for lifting the body off of the frame.

This is a very simple way to make more space in your garage, and also not very expensive. I think it was TR who did it originally, but not for sure. Good luck, have fun, and make sure you chain the car to a rafter in the ceiling to for extra safety when you are done.

Sorry about that

Sorry about that guys. What I really wanted to do is copy some pictures directly into my email, but for some reason the website would not let me. If you know how, that would be great info for later.

Anyway, I uploaded a picture of the body hoist into the Alblum section of 311s. It is in General Pictures. If you want more angles, details, etc...send me an email address and I can link you to my ofoto page.

Hope this helps

I think you are on the right track...

I'd take the extra weight out of the car just to reduce the loading on the body. It is pretty weak without the frame. I even went as far as making a brace to fit from the luggage area forward to under the dash, just in case...Probably overkill!

I also have a one car garage, and was going to design one myself. Im a carpenter and deck builder. But when I saw Mark Sedlack's setup, their was no need to waist the time. He even has plans on his site. I added industrial wheels to it so I can wheel the body out of the garage for more room. If you do add wheels, you have to add a higher cross support.
Here is Marks site. http://mildevco.net/chevypowereddatsuns/
Go to "The Body is Off" section. If you have never been to his site, you will be amazed.

Well I made my measurements and I'm starting to build it tomorrow with 2x6's.. I am leaning towards the wooden structure model. I already have the lumber on hand. Mark's roticerie is special but for saving space it would not help me as much as the lumber made unit. I also have a low cealing and can raise the body 36-40 inches at the most, which I feel is plenty.
I did not realize I seen the body hoist I was looking for at this site. Steve if you added a couple U20's and a rock saw I would be right at home, just kidding :D , I'm running out of room!.. Thanks again for the helpfull info and photo's that were posted elseware too.. Bill
