The 1" spacers were the trick to making the pull linkage work - Mike (exit64) cut them out of HDPE - essentially cutting board material.

Some more progress on my setup - figuring out the plumbing for the heater (I live in Oregon - I need a heater!).
It's very handy to have an extra engine for mocking stuff up!

Re: My Solution - Mikuni Carbs on an R16 / 1600
I managed to get some quality garage time on Sunday.
The poor casting of the intake required me to Dremel quite a bit to be able to get the rearmost washer on the mounting stud.
Alos my lovely handmade heat shield turned out to have a bit of a flaw - I designed it with the intake off the car and didn't realize that the exhaust manifold would be so close. I had to cut and bend it a bit.
The carbs are now on! They sit very low in the engine compartment - almost touching the inner fender. I'm thinking my engine mounts are really worn, and I'll have to check the transmission mount.

That really does look tight! Have you got room to get an air filter on there??
I like the heat shield, it looks pretty heavy duty!

Not nit picking here, just curious - why didn't you notch the heat shield like the U20 version? The R16 versions were not notched as they were made for the foreign market cars...

Re: My Solution - Mikuni Carbs on an R16 / 1600
I thought I'd see if I could get it to fit without the notch. The heat shield on Zippy rattled against the steering column and used to bug me!
We'll see if this will work. I'm concerned that the notch at the top for the exhaust might allow too much heat to get at the carbs. If so, I'll have to try a heat shield similar to the ones I've seen for SK carbs - attached to the carb itself.
Also, I just tried the U20 Solex air filter housing - it fits to the carbs (horizontal spacing is the same), but the rear carb is too close to the inner fender to fit. Not enough height between the inner fender and carb!
I think the engine and tranny mounts are wonky on this car. Either that or the H20 sits lower.

My H20 fits fine if that helps any, haven't noticed any clearance problems, but I only have the SU's on now. I have also just installed new Mounts so tough comparison.

Re: My Solution - Mikuni Carbs on an R16 / 1600
So, we ended up with 165 fuels, 190 airs and 65 pilots opened 1.5 turns. Changed the coil, may put a new condenser on it too. Has an occasional flat spot in the 2500 rpm range, sometimes after cruising at 3000 rpms for a while, it's a little hesitant to push through and accelerate, but gets through it and seems to be happy. Plugs are showing light bronze on the tips, carbs seem balanced.
I think this project is 99% complete. A little tweaking here and there, but I think we're in a good spot now.

I'll give this a shot too, exhaust and under the hood videos. The engine was still warming up and this is before we put the right jets in, but you get the idea. I'll try to get a driving video today.

I already have a set, manifold and all, just need to clean it up, go through them and install the things!
They just sound so good on your car, I gotta get it done!

Re: My Solution - Mikuni Carbs on an R16 / 1600
On my H20, I started with:
fuel - 142.5
air - 180
pilot - 62.5
about 3 turns out
This worked OK, but had a rough idle and hesitation when going from part throttle to full throttle. The overall sound was a bit "fluffy", which Dan says indicates an over-rich condition.
Dan did lots of adjusting and we are currently at
fuel - 135
air - 180
pilot - 52.5
(not sure how many turns out)
I gained back some of my low-end grunt and the idle is much smoother. Light throttle throughout is nice and smooth. No hesitation from part throttle to full - but some of the top end grunt is gone. Sounds "crisper".
We're planning on a few more tuning sessions to get everything dialed in.
And yes they really sound good - I have an exhaust leak to take care of, and then it should sound even better!
