New in ny buffalo rochester area
New in NY. Long story short i have been around my newly found obsession for the past 15yrs but just always thought of it as a cool little car, about 5yrs ago my father in law gave me a 1970 datsun 2000 U20-08009 srl311. The car has sat in his barn since 86 and in mine till about 2 weeks ago then it made the jump to the garage where i actually have tools and power. I am currently undertaking the task of getting it running not going so well no spark, power to coil but for some reason the roter is gouging the cap to the point where theres gouges about about 3/32 deep on all 4 contacts. I do not notice any movement from the rotor with the cap off, then i purchased a new cap and rotor and again the same issue. I am also pretty sure the vacum advance is froze up, i need a water pump and a growing list of other parts. I am around buffalo, rochester NY, and have not seen another 2000 around but there may be. any help or tips are greatly appreciated and thanks in advance. I will try to post pictures at some point and have joined the registry.

Hi and welcome, please post some pictures. The gouging of the cap is perplexing, but if the vacuum advance is frozen, it could bt the culprit. How many miles on the car?
If you grasp the distirbutor shaft can you move it up and down or side to side? If it won't move at all, then the VA maybe binding things up, if it moves excessively the bushings may be worn. Post some pics so we can help with more info.

Could also be a bent shaft or the wrong rotor. there is an Ebay seller, DownhillBill in your area, someone will post contact info. Good guy, lots of roadster stuff.

Welcome to the Roadster world, you will probably find more roadster owners in your area as I have here in Akron. Good luck with your project and yes, post pics. Jim

Welcome and good luck. My cousin Walter Miller is a big Roadster nut - and he lives in Syracuse. Sorry I can't help you w/ the distributor but I bet you can easily find someone who has done an EI dizzy upgrade and has an extra one.
What is the VIN for your car? If there's no plate near the hood latch, you can look at the frame under the carbs for the number - which should be stamped there - as well as on the dash near the steering wheel.
I have car SRL311-07371 so pretty close if that's your VIN and not the engine number.
Cheers
James

Re: New in ny buffalo rochester area
Thank you for the welcome and hints. I have found that the distributor shaft does have up and down movement but no movement side to side. I would like to put a electronic ignition in and was just wondering if i should try to rebuild this one with electronic parts or just buy a complete set up and if so which one? Also i am trying to post pictures and it must be to complicated for me so if anyone would be able to give me some pointers as far as posting pics that would be great.

Posting pics is easy, when you hit "Post reply" scroll down just below the text entry box, there is a blue bar "Upload attachment", just below that is a blank box with "browse..." beside it, click this, locate the file on your PC and click open. Then click "Add the File" (below the browse box) you can repeat this a few times. Hi "Submit" when you are done. There are some other choices and actions but this should get your pictures up and visible!
As far as recommendations on Electronic distributors, I tend to be biased and will let others respond!

Re: New in ny buffalo rochester area
Just to keep it all honest, I used to build electronic distributors before Notoptoy bought my company.
I'll offer the same generic advice I gave when I was selling them. If you have a good working points distributor with the early non smog advance curve, then an add-on style ignition is a viable option. If you have the stock 70 distributor and it's acting up, it may be far simpler to purchase a complete distributor from one of the vendors, as you would need to re-curve it with a non-smog advance curve kit, and then add an electronic kit, assuming there are no mechanical issues inside your original distributor.
Here's what I wrote as few years ago, covers most of the bases and I think is pretty unbiased.
