Post by rxsleeper »

I thought I should introduce myself since I have lurked here and finally joined after purchasing a '70 1600. See below :)

The car is really pretty clean having undergone a minor restoration many years ago. It needs lots of little things, some clean up on the body and then a repaint, and an interior refresh. There is some very minor rust in the drivers floorpan and the inner trunk fenderwells but I think that is about all of the serious rust. I will find out when I get home. I will be able to drive it on the trailer but it will take some hydraulic and electric work for me to be comfortable at driving on the street.

I recognize some names over here as I also own and race an SCCA ITS 240z and frequent the Z boards.

Anyway, I am in North Alabama and this will be a fun restoration for a pretty weather cruiser. I am hoping to involve my soon to be 13 yo daughter as she has already laid claim to the roadster as "Hers" when she gets old enough to drive.

I look forward to getting to know you guys and to tap some of the wealth of knowledge that is here.

Greetings from the Rocket City, :)

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the welcomes. Linda, my team owner and better half is a NASA employee. I merely worked for the Rocket City as a Police officer for 25 years. I imagine I will find Phil, or he will find me soon enough. The previous owner of this car is a NASA contractor and a multi time national autox champion and long time friend.

Sleepyzz, the Z is a 50/50 car in my eyes. 50 feet and 50 mph :) but it is fun to drive. Here is a link to some video from Road Atlanta last November. I get passed by a Corvette, and a GTA car that were running north of 160 mph. It was my first time driving Road Atlanta in more than 20 years so I left a lot of speed out there.

Well, if you were at Barber or the ARRC last year I was there in the Z and thank you for being there so I could play. I will be at TGPR soon for TT school. I also hope you can come to Nashville in June, we can use the workers!

A little update. I got her home today and drove her around the block a couple of times. Felt like the brakes were dragging a little and the carbs need some help but she ran pretty well for 41! :) Part of the documentation that came with the car are the original owners manual and warranty card, manual etc. A small ad for the car and the original bill of sale from the dealer to the first owner when they traded in a 1965 Plymouth ($1054.00 trade in) for $2,990.oo and change purchase price. There was also a copy of the Bill of Sale from the original owner to the current family/owner when they bought it in 1978. So it is a 2 owner car, documented with 121k miles (~81k at the time of the 1978 sale). Purchased new about 10 miles from where I bought it but traveling to Auburn, AL, Florida, and Colorado before returning to Huntsville.

The PO also told me a story about the trailer hitch he installed. He used it to flat tow his 1959 Bug Eye Sprite to Autox events around the southeast and then later towed another Roadster as well. I should add, he is a multi time national autox champion in several different cars. And then he told a story to my oldest son, who was helping me load the car, about being a passenger in my '71 240z, in about 1976, when I performed a hand brake U turn on a 2 lane road in front of a fraternity house. I probably could have done without that story being told :) :) :)

I have some other commitments tomorrow so maybe Sunday I can get her on the lift and see how much rust. In case the previous owner happens to browse over here, THANKS Steve. She will have a good home.!!

Waaaay too much mystery in that story! It sounds like entirely too much fun to glaze over the details like that! How about naming names and giving more background to the story?!!

It is very cool that you have so much documentation for your Roadster. I got mine from my sister who didn't know what she had at the time. I bought it from her, not knowing what she had, only knowing at the time that I wanted it! It took me about 17 years to figure out what I had and to start appreciating it (I'm pretty sure I bought it in 1989 or 90, I can't remember!!!!). I still know nothing about it's heritage other than there were a lot of "mods" and style changes that I both appreciate, and yet would not have done! You have a pedigree of sorts to be jealous of!
Thanks for sharing, now dish the rest of the story! :-)
