San Jose Roadsters: Engine pull party 10/21!

Post by Alvin »

We are going to help Joe "oppositelock" pull his R16/5-speed this Saturday, at my house.
Not a party per se, but feel free to stop by throughout the day to check it out.
Pizza + beer and some good times. I hope to do a little driving as well.

Sounds like a fun party. Wish I could come, but Seattle to San Jose is kind of a long haul.

The oem exhaust manifold keep hitting frame mount. Trying to get angle to lift out. Any suggestions?

You could take the mounts off. Not sure if we did that but might be necessary.
Keep the hardware correct for each side.
Taking pics as you go helped me.
Linda
Also if you take the radiator support pieces out you have more room

When I did my car I found that portion of the frame mysteriously cut and couldn't figure out why...until I dropped the motor back in.

Cool, thank you! Im a few months away from all this, but I hope to learn from some experts.

Back to the regularly scheduled program.

Engine pull commences!
I took plenty of pictures before we removed everything

Fine adjustment tool

Radiator and all engine bay items disconnected/removed:

Joe removed the driveshaft and I removed the tranny mount. Mike setup the hoist and leveler.
Image

Bagged tagged hardware:
Image

Everything went well until we tried to hoist it up. The exhaust manifold would hit the engine mounting pad on the frame. Tranny bell housing would hit the accelerator bar. The 5-speed tail shaft was miles away from clearing the x-frame. Despite our efforts to increase the angle that darn exhaust would just not clear the frame. We were confused. And we didn't want to remove the exhaust manifold.
Image

That's when Joe decided to keep it real and got out his plasma cutter...

HA! Raul came by and managed to reach the rear intake manifold nut:
Image

With the intake/exhaust manifolds out, it (obviously) came out in seconds:

The factory exhaust manifold:

We had lunch (thanks to my wife!)

Joe will have his 5-speed refreshed (along with other items :D )

Thanks to Joe(oppositelock), Mike(bikermike), and Raul (roadsterdude) for making it a fun weekend! The last time I pulled an engine (my U20) was in 2002
