Ted Schumacher TSI Imports sells a terrific little starter that has been on my race car forever. I highly recommend it! http://www.tsimportedautomotive.com/gea ... rters.html

I've seen this on a u20 and it works well and makes live a little easier to get to things. Andrew

Installed a TSI GRS more than a decade ago. Makes a huge positive difference. Low current draw, and motors the engine quickly.

RW, how does the size compare to the commonly available forklift gear reduction starters?

No basis for comparison with ‘forklift starter’, but shorter and a bit stouter than the original U20 starter. Much easier to manipulate in/out/off/on, if necessary, and hasn’t been since OEM was replaced more than a decade ago.

Thanks for the reply. That helps...I think I may go ahead and order one. The website is not very modern, to put it nicely. It looks like you have to print out a pdf of their order form, fill it out by hand and fax (!) or email it back.

If you google " DB electrical SMT0003", that is the replacement for M1T60081, and M1T60381. Should be $60.00 plus or minus. I got mine thru Walmart. Pat

For size reference, pic is of my OEM starter vs. a new gear reduction starter I got from Dean. Big difference in size (7 1/4” vs. 8 1/2”) and MUCH easier to get in and out. I actually have some clearance between the header and starter now - Maybe I won’t cook this one.

If anything, by comparison, the TSI GRS is even a bit shorter and stouter.
