Steering wheel installation and mods photos

Hi List
I was hoping to see some photos of a steering wheel installation and modification for non stock wheels. I know how the stock wheel iinstalls but I have a MOMO I want to use. I have the hub adaptor and spacer but something is not right. This is when a pic can be very helpful.
Any links to the installation process?

Do you have a MOMO brand, Datsun roadster-SPECIFIC hub adapter?
why do you need a spacer?
It should be a bolt-on affair.
I know the Grant-momo adapter has problems and the 240z Momo adapter is a tight fit on the shaft splines.

Ken Ogi had an install page with pics, and I think Steve Allen might have some pics too?

I have a Grant adapter for the Roadster,#4581, then a Grant to Momo "adapter" or "spacer" which is supposed to allow a 6 hole Momo wheel to install onto the 5 hole Grant hub. But the holes look wrong somehow.

I did it long ago but never took any pictures. I had to use a 240Z hub adapter and the splines were not 100% accurate but I have never had my steering wheel come off. As to the quick disconnect adapters-leave those for the race cars. They generally have them as it is easy getting in and out of a roll caged race car with the steering wheel out of the way. But hey-if you wanna be a racer-go for it. I guess as long as you take it with you it would be a nice deterrent to getting your car jacked.

I recommend just finding the normal MOMO hub.
If you end up using the grant "adapter/spacer" it will push the steering wheel closer to your chest...makes driving awkward and will tire your arms up fast!
I followed Ken's advice and had the adapter narrowed/re-welded so it would be closer to the dash


Do you need a picture of the adapter holes and the momo wheel lining up?
I crack my wheel off tonight, let me know

Nice looking MOMO Competition wheel. Looks like it would be very comfortable to use.
Would be nice to see how you modified the Momo hub to put the wheel where you wanted it. Is it closer than stock, or the same? Stock location is fine for me.
I assume that hub fits the splines well, not like the 240 Z hub that Steve mentioned, slightly off.

The thing about the quick release hubs is that it can be a theft deterrent, apparently, and a way to retain your steering wheel too. I saw one quick release (NRG?) that had a lock so that after the wheel was removed a new wheel could not be swapped in. Kind of a cumbersome theft deterrent but it could keep a amateur thief from bothering. Yes, if they really want the car, etc, etc.

IIRC, there are 2 6-hole patterns, Momo and Nardi/Luisa, which are very similar, and then the 5-hole Grant. Some adapters have multiple sets of holes, and the trick is starting with the wheel level and the adapter in straight ahead position. If unsure, rotate the wheel on the adapter until 6 holes line up. Don't forget the pin to cancel the signals.

Oh, and disconnect the battery before starting. The horn tends to be annoying while you play around.

I believe that Fairlady parts made a special run of Momo hub adapters just for the roadster. Didn't see it on their website. Probably worth giving them a call to see if any are available.

Taking a break from cleaning up after Hurricane Ike... I installed a Grant 13.5" diameter steering wheel with a #4581 adapter on my 70 SPL. Purchased the steering wheel from ebay member "imctjt", transaction was flawless. His bid indicated that additional steering wheels are available.

Hey all,
Got the Momo hub and steering wheel installed for a test fit. Still need to do some polishing.
Can't get the horn to work and the turn signals don't cancel. I have some little "pins" but not sure how they install. The wheel may be closer but it doesn't feel like a problem.
I like the look of wood and the refinishing was not very difficult. I still need to do a bit more but it is a good "10 footer" wheel at this point. I used Minwax water based wipe-on polyurethane which goes on easily and dries quickly minimizing contaminants settling on the finish. It is not as weatherproof but that is a minor issue for this car.
The next one will be easier
